Former Procol Harum Bassist Alan Cartwright Dead at 75
Alan Cartwright, the Procol Harum bassist who played with what Gary Brooker called “the most memorable” of the band’s many lineups, has died at age 75.
Cartwright died March 4 and had been diagnosed with stomach cancer in 2020.
“Very sad to hear this news,” the band posted on its Facebook page.
Cartwright joined Procol Harum in time for 1972’s Live: In Concert with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra and appeared on the studio albums Grand Hotel, Exotic Birds and Fruit and Procol’s Ninth before retiring from music.
Brooker, Procol’s sole remaining original member, eulogized Cartwright as “always a very solid, musical and reliable bass player, and a good bloke who gave of his best” in the studio and on the road during his time with the band.
“Only five years but, to me, the most memorable Procol Harum era of all time, thanks to the wonderful, positive presence of Cartwright,” Brooker wrote on the band’s website.
