My college ostensibly has a rivalry with the only other sizeable university in Alaska (no one cares about this the way they do in the lower 48) and the most hyped aspect of this so-called rivalry is a men's hockey game for "the Governor's Cup" which we have won for the last fifteen years in a row. Like I think maybe this is just a humiliation ritual at this pt
Saw a porcupine waddling across the road yesterday evening, so let's all take a moment appreciate this poem I ripped out of the newspaper in high school:
Fish & Game had a black bear that was getting into cabins and being food aggressive to people, I think this was in remote Southcentral AK, and so they put a bounty on its head. He brought the hide with paws attached into ADF&G like you're supposed to but there wasn't no skull
[REDACTED] ALASKA REAL ESTATE LISTINGS
Literal shack, 8x12, no running water, five acres of black spruce on permafrost. 75k.
Greige McMansion, 4 bed 3 bath, absurd fuckoff detached garage, obliterated moon crater turf lawn lot in what would be a beautiful patch of woods, visible vapor barrier issues. 585k
Log house, 3 bed 2 bath, dicey foundation, darker than a coal pit in the middle of summer, 2.5 acres of nice white spruce. 425k.
Normal house, built in the 80s and never updated, quarter acre suburban lot in the coldest part of town. 300k.
Normal house, averages 20 fighter jet flights directly over head every day. 300k.
Retrofuturistic tower slash yoga retreat slash airplane hanger, beautiful views of the mountains, ten acres of secluded south-facing hillside. 1 william dollars.
And by the time you're able to buy, you've spent 10 yrs renting a permafrost shack & buying one seems more reasonable than being able to (shudder) see your neighbors
when i was in grad school my advisor was very proud of taking his daughter on her first camping trip (she was four) and i was SHOCKED because how do you have a human for four whole years without taking her camping? and then i met full grown adults in my program who had never been camping and had to reevaluate. anyway the whole thing was a good reminder that my experiences were not universal
