Interviewing the Flock, featuring: Brother Nerd!
Zach: First off, what would you like me to call you?
Albato: Heh, got quite a few that would be fine- Brother Nerd, Albato, Elocator, Fennarin, Fence.
Zach: Alright.
Zach: You have the opportunity to live in a fictional world, excluding the one of Sister Claire. Where would you choose to live?
Albato: Sheet, uhhh, hm. The most I can think of is skip straight to Next Gen Star Trek.
Outside of that, ehhh not really my thing to fantasize about living anywhere but right here with my friends and immediate family.
Zach: Your ideal home is not a fixed location but instead where you are around those who share love with you?
Albato: Yeah, I guess you could say that! There are a lot of times I wish I could bring others to me so that I could keep them all in healthier environments.
Zach: That would certainly be enjoyable for both parties, I'm sure.
Zach: Going back to the first question, is there a story behind your username?
Albato: Heh, which one? All of them?
Zach: Hm. Let's say Albato, or Brother Nerd. You have used both in the Flock.
Albato: Albato is honestly just something I made up when I went to sign up for Star Craft: Brood Wars Battle.net. I actually pronounced it in my head as Al-bey-toh.
Brother Nerd is however, me somewhat coming out as who I identify as. I was signing up for the Extra Curricular forums -a fan forum for Extra Credits- and decided that I wanted to be more open about me. Brother was to give a nod to my Roman Catholicism, while Nerd was, well, I'm a huge nerd when it comes to history, philosophy, theology, some science, & tabletop.
Zach: Good nod and shoutout in both parts. Also I have been pronouncing that wrong in my head this whole time.
Noted.
Albato: Heh, to be fair, I think probably everyone who's seen it before hearing me say it has said it wrong.
Zach: You're probably right, yeah.
Zach: So far on the server you haven't set a custom avatar. Do you have any particular reason? Do you like the color scheme and design you currently have?
Albato: Nah, I just haven't felt the need to, mostly. It took me probably the better part of a year to finally decide on one for Extra Curricular, and a similar time to decide to start using images on Ponychan before that, at least another similar length of time to decide to start specifically using Fluttershy.
Zach: Okay.
What kind of factors weighed in on your decision when you did choose one?
Was it indecisiveness or not overly important or just no time to focus in on exactly what picture would work?
Albato: It was a 'not overly important' thing. What caused me to finally decide on Fluttershy for Ponychan was simply realizing that out of the mane 6, she was the least used at the time. As for Extra Curricular, I decided on a Treebeard pic because it was a reminder mostly to myself -but a bit to others as well- to slow down, and think out what you put down. This is the internet, you have all the time you need to express what you want to say in a open-minded, level-headed manner.
Zach: Those are remarkably good reasons. I like your thought process.
Albato: Thankye kindly.
Zach: Do you have a useless but impressive talent? A party trick, if you will?
Albato: Not that I'm aware of? I can sing and play a few instruments, but have made no attempt to make anything of it. Been told I should be a "Professional DM" before, but never gone for that either. Closest I can think of: I have a knack for basic math?
Zach: Hey, it's not something everyone has. That counts.
Zach: Alright, now I'm going to ask you a question that I don't have prepared. Instead it's from a book of them. Pick a number.
Albato: 75
Zach: Ooh, this could be good.
After a medical examination, your doctor calls and gravely says you have a rare lymphatic cancer and only a few months to live.
Five days later, she informs you that the lab tests were mislabeled; you are perfectly healthy. Forced for a moment to look death in the face, you have been allowed to turn and go on.
During those difficult days you would certainly have gained some insights about yourself. Do you think they would be worth the pain?
Albato: Oof, ah, erg. Well, I'd like to establish how close to home that would hit for my mother, my brothers, and I: My father died of cancer, and I am almost a clone of him at my age, including in ways that I express myself.
Zach: Oh.
Zach: Wow. I'm sorry about your loss. We can skip this question if it would be more comfortable.
Albato: I would be okay with that.
Zach: What is the greatest accomplishment of your life?
Is there anything you hope to do that is even better?
Albato: Honestly, given my battle with childhood depression, and years of nothing even remotely resembling therapy, I'd say my greatest accomplishment was making it this far. There was a timeframe I didn't expect to put up with it all long enough to even make it through Elementary School.
As for hoping to do something that is even better? I hope to one day be more than "just making it by". My writing is the start of that, but that's not by any means the end of it. I want to overcome my anxiety and start giving my time charitably. I want to plan the most efficient way to use my money charitably. I want to give of myself as I've always felt a draw to do. I want to be the love that I feel thrumming through me and not hide from it anymore.
Zach: You have good goals.
Albato: Thank you.
Zach: In what way have you considered giving your time? Do you have volunteering ideas?
Albato: A few ways, mostly ways in which I can improve the situation in general, such as helping build homes and finding ways to advocate for creating and opening jobs for the disadvantaged. We have this tendency to convince ourselves that people are in hopeless situations because they choose to be, and while those people do indeed exist, they are the very loud and blaring exceptions, not the rule. However, this would require me to be face-to-face with people, and right now that kind of contact is something I have a difficult time with, especially when it comes to putting my foot down and being forceful, which I would need to do.
Zach: It sounds like you've put thought and consideration into this. You said earlier that you're hoping one day you could get to this, but you've already acknowledged how you want to help, what kind of challenge you'd like to work with, and the obstacles you would face. I'd say this plan is further along than one day.
I hope you get there.
Albato: It's a struggle I constantly find myself closer to breaking through the other side of.
Zach: Might be related question, might not: What is your ideal career look like?
If you are already working towards it, what would be your second pick in a completely different direction?
Albato: A mix of a consistent part-time job, like a clerk or some such, for consistency as I am terrible with telling time and need a constant thing in my life to do that, and just writing for the rest of it.
Second, heck if I know, something in music? Maybe look into being a Deacon instead.
Zach: What type of topics to write about? Fiction/non-fiction, themed, historical or modern, in an editorial or a novel? Would you write in various formats?
Albato: Fiction, and themed. Topical things for sure, and more novel-style. Variety is certainly on the table. Anything to get my readers to stop, look at what they just read, and think about the world around them, and what they can do to help, even if they feel that they can only muster small nods for the moment. A quote that comes to mind is: "Never doubt that a small group of committed people can change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has." -Margaret Mead
Zach: Cool!
Zach: Alright, we're at the end of the questions. Would you like the last one to be a little more serious, or fun?
Albato: Flip a coin!
Zach: --proceeds to random.org/coins--
...We should probably designate what side means what.
Albato: Heads=srsbsns
Zach: --Flips coin-- Tails it is! Heh, fitting.
Albato: a'ight.
Zach: Pick a non-human companion. Do you have an animal companion you'd enjoy accompanying you for your life?
Albato: Ah geeze. Honestly, I'm a lot better with people.
I understand how to get them to accept the things that are good for them and go through with it a lot easier. I owned a guinea pig for a time and I had the worst time trying to clip her claws because she'd always freak out. Also, needing to take care of a pet is a hassle and a half at times, and I had to do a lot of taking care of others' pets, so at least for the moment, I am enjoying my pet-free environment.
Zach: Not having to vacuum daily to clear up shedding is certainly a plus...
Albato: Besides that, I like to have someone to actually respond when I talk, rather than a dog that just wags because: attention, or just about any other animal that just ignores my ramblings.
Heh, that's it, maybe a Raven, if I can find one that would actually hold a conversation with me instead of just repeating things I've said.
Zach: That would be quite the companion, then. Be on the lookout for anyone that tries teaching it to say Nevermore.
Albato: Pfff. My friends know better than to pull pranks/practical jokes on me. My tolerance for such things is non-existent, and I would very quickly find something that would make them genuinely miserable for an extended period of time. Violence is beneath humans in my opinion, but that is not the same as saying we shouldn't be prepared to teach people what is and is not acceptable.
Zach: Also noted!
The lovely ladies of the Battleship Arcadia! La Miime and Kei Yuki.
La Miime has several different designs between all of the different adaptations of the Arcadia's travels, but this version, from Arcadia of my Youth and Endless Orbit SSX, is my favorite!
And I realize that Kei only wears that cloak in one episode, but it's just so cool!
