I’m really, really grateful I was able to stop drinking.
I’m really grateful I never drove drunk.
I’m really grateful no one ever took advantage of me while I was drunk.
I’m really grateful I never left the oven or something on while drunk.
I read stories about people who were drinking and then as a consequence of their actions something terrible happened. Then everyone reading thinks “what a loser who doesn’t have any self control, they got what they were asking for.” I think that very, very easily could have been me in one of those stories.
Getting sober, getting and keeping a job, losing weight, and the aftermath of doing all those things is really hard, literally the hardest thing I have ever done. A lot of the times I feel like I’m climbing up the side of a cliff without a harness and I could fall at any moment.
But being drunk, underemployed and overweight, and knowing that was who I was, was SO MUCH HARDER. You don’t get to not suffer. Life is suffering. But you get to pick how your suffer. Now at the end of the day, no matter how exhausted and depressed I may feel, I know the suffering was at least bringing me towards my best self.
Small victory
I work with mostly guys so during the start of March madness, no one was really getting any work done, so they all wanted to leave early to go to a bar together to watch the game
...and I ordered a mock tail and everything was ok! It was the first time I was not drinking around people who were drinking and unaware of my addiction. I was very pleased it went ok and I wasn’t tempted and it wasn’t weird of me to not participate.
I’m not planning on relapsing whatsoever but
Please Sometimes I can’t help but wonder what was The Point™️ of getting sober/better when the world is hell in every direction with no hope of improving? This is weighing on my heavily.
BIG MOOD
I remember creating this New Years resolution list at the very very beginning of 2018 and... I did practically all of them! (Except quit/cut down on smoking) .. even the hardest ones like quitting drinking and losing 50 pounds and getting a new job.
There’s been a lot of difficult situations in between for sure. I’m pretty sure K and I are done completely. I miss out on a lot because I still won’t go to an event with alcohol present, and I have to DRAG myself kicking and screaming to work and excercise because self discipline doesn’t come naturally to me at all.
But I’ve done almost a 180 degree turn in one year and I couldn’t be prouder of myself. I have great hope for the future and I’ll probably post a 2019 New Years resolution list soon. I hope you guys are doing well and are having a safe and fun holiday. ❤️
