he is hiding above the clouds. a gleam of silver in dimming light, and a glimpse of membrane the color of a setting sun. his call echoes, raises the skin across their arms and the hair on the back of their neck. he is a beautiful beast. a deadly hunter and merciless when angered, but beautiful.
he also needs a name.
↬ @alcriti says, “ fear will make you fight. ”
florence is drawn from their thoughts by astarion’s voice. truth be told, they had forgotten he stood near. too much on the mind, and too little time to sort through it all. “ it will ? ”
fear is a motivator. a terrible motivator, they think, when it is likely your dogs will turn tail and run. “ i have to disagree. i do not think it will be fear. i think it will be the ghost above that forces my hand; he and his hunger for battle. ”
and he is hungry for battle. he hunts the hills and shore indiscriminately. he’ll hunt their enemies too.
“ do you fight for fear ? i do not think i will, but i do think i’ll take up the sword for loyalty. ”
↬@alcriti says, “ a heart’s a heavy burden. . . i’m glad mine isn’t beating ! ”
“ oh, ha ha. how hilarious of you ! ”
their mockery comes from the ground. too tired to care where they landed, florence stretched and yawned and tried to close their eyes. joints popped, and a new wave of exhaustion followed the yawn. astarion stands in the way of the third.
florence refuses to sit up, but they do a flippant gesture. “ it’s still there, isn’t it ? a weight in the chest. a heavy burden. don’t lie; it weighs you down now and then, doesn’t it ? ”
@alcriti asked: ' aren't bards supposed to be full of lust and whatever else their bawdy songs are about? you're probably the least lovey bard i've ever met... why is that, lorelei? ' 👀👀
“ well, if those are the only kind of bards you've met, sorry, luv, you've been hanging around very boring people. ” annoyed, lorelei shrugs, her mouth pulling downward at the accusation. she is was a bard; she's painfully aware of the countless stereotypes that follow her profession wherever it goes. and, truth be told, she'd indulged in more than a few of them during her college years ( not that 𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐧 needed to know. gods forbid. ) still, that doesn't stop her from rolling her eyes.
“ but that might be because i don't have a reason to be romantic anymore— ” she has pondered how to phrase it, the reason behind the melancholic notes she plays before casting old, familiar spells. in the end, she settles for something vague enough to discourage further questions while remaining technically true. “ that, and the fact that i dealt in rumors rather than sex. ” red lips curl into a fond smile. oh, baldur's gate's shady alleys . . . how she misses you.
unprompted !
@alcriti said ' maybe you should just admit, for once in your life alara, that you're utterly wrong! ' 🤗❤ i feel like they are also EXTREMELY CHILDISH with each other
❝ i would – if i were ! ❞
fantastic, they bicker back & forth, voices carrying across the camp like eight - year - olds scrabbling after one another, slinging mud & wrestling by the riverbank. the sort of ill - behaved mongrels she never played with, & observed with resentful disdain.
it shouldn't matter, except she's not wrong, & certainly not utterly. not that she would admit to it if she were; he'd lord it over her head insufferably – as is his way, as he does most things at his annoying height – for years, she's certain.
she's certain because she will in the reverse.
& it will be sweet.
❝ you're the one who's ' utterly wrong ' ! so much so that i'd even wager a few danters on it. ❞ the challenging little lift of her sculpted brow asks can you say the same ? & all but dares him to put his money where his mouth is. ❝ what say you ? care to bet against someone who can see the future ? ❞
❝ i think my mask of sanity is about to slip. ❞ cordelia

Brows furrowed at Astarion's confession. She wanted to reach out and hold him, wanted to tell him that everything would be okay, that they needn't worry about Bhaal or Cazador right then, but she knew both of those statements would be lies. Taking a deep, shaky breath, Cordelia reached out to gently take his hand in her own, squeezing it softly, trying her best to comfort. She knew she wasn't the best at it, but for him? She'd try just about anything to help. "That's my job." She teased, forcing a smile to her lips as her gaze met his, "Yours is the witty banter, alright? Let's just focus on that or the stars for right now." The warlock offered, "I'm sure we could steal some of Shadowheart's wine if we're quiet enough?"

𝑾𝑯𝑬𝑵 𝑻𝑯𝑬𝒀 𝑯𝑨𝑫 𝑳𝑨𝑺𝑻 𝑺𝑬𝑬𝑵 𝑬𝑨𝑪𝑯 𝑶𝑻𝑯𝑬𝑹, Ruby had finally shed her mortal shape to better aid in the final battle. The brain had fallen, and Ruby had allowed herself only an hour of rest before opening a doorway home without so much as a goodbye. Sentiment had never become her; better to simply leave and let everyone else get on with their lives.
It was a surprise, then, to see one of her old traveling companions on the long walk up to the Palace of Pages. Once more, Ruby lost track of the years all too quickly, and so there was no telling what year it was back on the Prime Material Plane. Perhaps it had only been a week, or even a day. Perhaps time had gone backwards again, and Astarion had yet to meet her in the first place.
She wondered.
He was welcome, at any rate, and the grand oak doors swung open of their own accord, revealing the Archivist in all her grandeur. "Astarion," she said by way of greeting. "One need hardly tell you that this is most unexpected."
