Alex Ramsay’s work centres around the unique processes of hand-working metal - using everything from silver and gold to steel, non precious metals, and architectural alloys. 

Her designs are often inspired by the ethereal yet powerful shapes and colours found in nature, a fascination that arose during time spent amongst the mountains and lochs of western Scotland. Alex is presenting a new collection called Lichen at The New Craftsmen pop-up, which is a result of a desire to expand upon her work combining glass and silver, and a subsequent journey to Iceland to draw inspiration from the mountainous landscape.  Alex gathered visual stimulus while walking 50km alone through the Icelandic mountains, going from hut to hut, and drawing and photographing along the way. Back in the studio, she developed a technique to create texture on the silver that is reminiscent of lichen, as well as evoking layers and shadows through the combination of materials and techniques. 

Like the landscapes they echo, her pieces come alive when seen in person – they are made to be handled, to keep changing and giving, and to respond to the shadow and light around them.
