Day 188

Unless Fact #188: It’s possible to Estimate of the temp outside in Fahrenheit. just count the number of times a cricket chirps in 15 seconds, and then add 37.

“Today’s my birthday. We’ve stopped using dates though. But some of us know it’s June 4th. Still, most of us can’t get passed the big numbers written in chalk, on the blackboard we put in the mess hall that read: Day 188.

“We’re lucky. We have electricity. We have running water. We have weapons. We have people that will do anything to defend their home.

“But this time isn’t without its sacrifices. Electricity isn’t used in non-essential areas, and we’re all a little on edge because it’s any day we could be without. We’re limited to a warm shower once every three days, but some people don’t even bother with that. Those people aren’t just beginning to stink. They Fraking stink. The end. So that’s pretty lame sauce.

“The Memorial Tree… or as I like to call it: “The Tree for the Lost.” (It’s a working title.) You know it’s a good day when we haven’t added another set of dog tags to it. We’ve had three in a row. And I think people are starting to get restless. Ever since the General died… we just all sort of expect death.

“The Colonel and the Major are holding it together; keeping us on task. But without them… I don’t know if any of us would stay. 

“Eventually it’s gonna get cold again. And maybe the electricity will hold out. And maybe the water will keep running. And maybe we’ll survive. But as the Starks of Winterfell would say, “Winter is Coming.” (Sorry, I couldn’t resist)

“That helps. That’s how I cope. My brother doesn’t understand because he’s all high on the Jesus Juice. But I’d rather imagine going to the Blessed Realms than going to----”
