Painter Alex Schaefer paints banks on fire using a “plein air” technique. Plein Air is the act of painting outdoors in the open air, and in Alex’s case, he paints directly across the banks.

Chase Bank in Flames, Wilshire Blvd
Alex Schaefer
So there’s this artist, Alex Schaefer, who makes a bunch of paintings of Chase Bank burning.
There’s just
so many of these
and I think it’s incredibly funny but
I just read this bit from the artist and
This is a "plein air" painting which means I set up my easel right across the street of this Chase bank in my city and painted it like it had caught fire. The police questioned me on the spot. Three weeks later Homeland Security was knocking on the door to my home. The question they kept asking me was "Do you hate these banks?" I can honestly say yes.
And I just think this is the greatest artist statement I’ve ever read.

Draw someone burning something to the ground? (I’m joking I promise lol)
actually there IS an artist who became kinda famous doing this and this feels like a great opportunity to talk about him haha
Alex Schaefer is a contemporary artist who's been both praised and criticized for his plein air paintings in which he sat across from Chase bank buildings and painted them from life... but with the added creative twist of them burning to the ground 💀😆
and yeah this apparently made local authorities and even Homeland Security very concerned that he was some vigilante arsonist painting his "future targets" with plans to actually burn these buildings down, but really he's just a normal guy venting out his frustrations towards big business and exploitative banks through the act of painting, as an artist does LOL
there's a viral tumblr post about this guy that you can read in full here (you've probably already seen it though considering it's been reblogged thousands of times, but if you HAVEN'T seen this before, then congrats! you're today's lucky 10000!)
has this been done yet
