It has long been a tradition in this country that a mayor holding office should have an official portrait painted of them and displayed in the council halls and offices of their respective borough. There the depiction of their solemn dignity and civic excellence can inspire the people of that town with a sense of pride for their shared cultural heritage. However this tradition has been cruelly ignored by the current borough council of Stafford with their refusal to display the portrait of James Billington, the current (and completely legitimate) mayor of Stafford. This is a grave insult, not just to the mayor, or the artist of the portrait, but to the entire people of Stafford, who have been robbed of one of their most important historical and cultural traditions, the mayoral portrait. To that end, we the people of Stafford, past and present, demand the following: That the official mayoral portrait of James Billington, the TRUE mayor of Stafford, be displayed in it's rightful place in the Stafford Borough Civic Centre building and other notable places of bureaucratic distinction. This petition is for all the proper and right-minded people of Stafford, who deserve the right to enjoy the historical legacy of their county town, and pay respect to the all the true and completely legitimate mayors who have served her.
It’s been over a year since it’s unveiling, and STILL Stafford Borough Council refuses to hang up my portrait of the true (and completely legitimate) mayor of Stafford. To that end, I have created this petition to raise awareness and revolution. If you would like to see my bad painting of an (allegedly) fraudulent mayor grace the offices of a small, West-Midlands county town, then please SIGN THIS PETITION.
