Ok, technically I saw this issue mentioned on twitter but I’ve seen it before on tumblr too, so I needed to make a tumblr post about it. Like, hate to break it to you for the (hopefully) few people people that truly think this, but I don’t know a country in the world where racism doesn’t exist- racism is not just an “American” issue, it very much exists in Europe as well INCLUDING Sweden, and in the world of Young Royals(AND to be clear, race issues and class issues are often related, it’s not just one or the other as I’ve seen some people imply).

I really disagree with anyone that erases racial issues from the story in Young Royals(in fairness, many people in the fandom don’t do this). The issues in the show are not all racial, and I certainly don’t think racism is the driving force of the problems in the show, but you CANNOT ignore that race is an aspect. We often praise yr for its realism in many aspects, and racial bias is unfortunately very much a part of the real world. Yes, the story could have still been executed even if race was taken out of the equation, but the fact of the matter is there ARE nonwhite characters(as there should be, because white it not the default), which adds depth, and you can’t just remove that people will analyze how that impacts the story. Young Royals is not written to be some utopian world where prejudice doesn’t exist- in fact, it’s quite literally the opposite. Hillerska is a traditional place where social divides are shown pretty explicitly and subtly, so it doesn’t make sense to see some people analyze all these other realistic social issues in the show but deny the racism. Yes, we have poc that are a part of the “elite” class like Felice, Nils, and Alexander(and I really appreciate how the show is inclusive with its casting), but that doesn’t mean they are free from microaggressions/race divides. For instance, Felice’s journey with her natural hair; the Society needing to be first sons of noble blood, which will inevitably be white boys(and also these white boys are considered of the highest status because they have the most history,) and not accepting people like Nils; etc, ALL have roots in racism to an extent. (also the Society is so messed up and creepy as a concept but that’s a different post)  

Additionally, Simon being a poc is by no means the only issue with the video scandal, but it’s a bit reductive and naive imo to think that there are no extra struggles, even if indirect/subconcious, that come from the prince being with a latin boy.

I mostly believe that if people completely think that none of the issues in the show have anything to with race, there’s a likely chance they don’t understand what it’s like to be a poc in western country and they’re overlooking how traditional Hillerska is. I’m not saying we should attack people for every small mistake, because I don’t think that’s productive or right, but come on guys, there is a bare minimum, which includes not gaslighting people who bring up the racial aspects and refusing to consider that race is a factor in analysis.

I appreciate that the creators said they wanted to cast in an inclusive way that was reflective of reality, because I truly do think it made a great end product. To be clear, the characters are more than just their race, they are people and fully fleshed out characters, and they are more than just stereotypes. Analyzing race in the show in no ways strips them of their well-roundedness and individuality.

I was shocked when I saw how easily Alexander changed his idea about Wilhelm. Like, Wilhelm was always nice to him in both seasons, then August (that literally treated him in the way he did for whole season 1) tells him that Wilhelm was the one who decides to give the fault to Alexander and he goes "yeah sure makes sense I'll hate him now and I am willing to go to jail for you"??? Like??? What Wilhelm did was wrong, okay, but did it really take just a sentence out of August's mouth to make him change his idea so quickly?? And make him decide that he would take the fault for August?????

rewatching young royals more times: actually alexander was treated like august's personal slave and as bad as it sounds, he probably would be better off at another school. hopefully he can make actual friends that don't treat him like shit

YR S01e05 - August's control and Alexander’s downfall

So like all of my besties here, I was re-watching YR and something came to mind, so please bear with me in this break down of the whole August x Alexander x drugs fiasco.

So August’s emergency meeting comes after Felice breaks up with him over the insta-story of her and Sara, and he’s obviously not stoked that he’s been outed between the girls (surprise surprise, girls talk). I realised that we never see August address this “break-up”, or really do anything with Felice. He doesn’t confront her, try to win her back, apologise, grovel,  negotiate...nothing. But we know that it does foil his plan in his very mapped out life (to marry Felice, specifically).

Given how he’s lost control of his money and relationship aspects, it makes sense that August will try and take back control in the other areas of his life, namely his power over his peers, and his drive to be the Crown Prince’s second in command (well, really he wants to be the puppeteer controlling the crown if he could). So lo and behold, he calls an emergency meeting to discuss what they’re going to do in response to Alex’s situation.

And then the thought hit me. August could be completely lying. The thing is, Alexander never came across as the blackmail type and he genuinely seemed like he admired the noble kids, wanting to fit in and be a part of everything with them. And he was loyal. I don’t believe it for a second that he went to August threatening to out the whole Society (Crown Prince inclusive), just to stay in school...? Knowing his social/monetary status (hinted by Wilhelm later on), he could’ve/would’ve probably stayed silent, his family would probably move some sneaky money around with a generous donation to the school and voila, problem swept under the rug.

I think August made up this threat as his attempt to out Wilhelm at the same time prove a point that he has the information and manipulation skills to push the Crown Prince to play by his rules. And THAT is his power move. To control Wilhelm.

Now, we all know Wilhelm doesn’t fall for this and very much smacks August in his face with a big, fat ‘I DON’T THINK SO cuz you’re broke and I’m the crown prince, bitch’, but the sad fact is that this ends up making it Wilhelm’s decision that results in Alexander downfall and taking full blame for the incident.

I’d be curious to know how Alexander will deal with this. Will he stay quiet and take the hit, thinking it was to protect the crown? Or will it be the hit that causes Alex to think twice on where his loyalties lie, putting the Society at risk? Or will we never hear of him again because he moves to a different school and good for him for getting out of that toxic environment?

I pray unnecessary drama won’t ensue because Lisa is a god and in her we trust. But I do want to know how this would pan out in a realistic sense...

does anyone know where that season 2 bts pic with alexander is? I could’ve sworn a pic of him and wille/the cast came out because that’s how we got confirmation that alexander was going to be back? but for the life of me I can’t find it.

for that matter has anyone made a compilation of all the s2 bts we’ve gotten in one place? if someone has it’d be a godsend
