The Battle of Lochmaben Fair: A Scottish Rebel’s Defeat
On July 22, 1484, the Battle of Lochmaben Fair was fought in Scotland as political rivalries within the Stewart dynasty turned into open conflict. A force of around 500 men, led by Alexander Stewart, Duke of Albany, and James Douglas, 9th Earl of Douglas, invaded Scotland in an attempt to challenge the rule of Albany’s brother, King James III.
The raiding force was met by Scottish troops loyal to James III near Lochmaben. The royalist army defeated Albany and Douglas’s forces, ending their attempt to gain support in Scotland. During the battle, the once-powerful James Douglas, 9th Earl of Douglas, was captured, marking the final downfall of one of Scotland’s most influential noble families.
The defeat strengthened James III’s position and brought an end to Douglas resistance in Scotland. The Battle of Lochmaben Fair remains a significant moment in the struggles between the Scottish crown and the powerful nobles who challenged royal authority during the late medieval period.
Death of Alexander Stewart, Earl of Buchan, “The Wolf of Badenoch”
On July 20, 1405, Alexander Stewart, Earl of Buchan, died at his castle of Lochindorb in Scotland. The fourth son of King Robert II of Scotland, Stewart was one of the most powerful and controversial nobles of late 14th-century Scotland. Known as “The Wolf of Badenoch,” he gained a fearsome reputation for his military campaigns, harsh rule, and conflicts with the Scottish Church.
Alexander Stewart’s most infamous episode came in 1390 when he led a devastating raid against the town of Elgin and burned its cathedral during his dispute with the Bishop of Moray. The destruction earned him lasting condemnation, though he later made efforts to reconcile with the Church. His power came from his control of vast territories in the Highlands, including Badenoch, where he ruled with considerable independence.
Despite his turbulent reputation, Stewart remained an important figure in Scottish politics during the reigns of his father, Robert II, and his nephew, Robert III. His death marked the end of one of the most notorious noble careers in medieval Scotland, leaving behind a legacy of both ambition and destruction.
