Despite having a healthy & handsome #Stuart successor to the throne following the death of #queenanne - parliament, fearing both her brother #JamesIII's popularity & liberal views - that people should be free to choose their own religion without prejudice (or none at all) - parliament shopped around Europe for any Protestant willing to wear the crown of the UK...finally persuading GeorgeI of Hanover to do the job although given his lack of the English language, the newspapers joked he probably had no idea what he'd got himself into. Still he could ride a horse & wear a wig as well as the next chap so Parliament was content. Parliament no doubt saw his lack of English as a plus. King JamesIII meanwhile set up his rival court in Rome which was the main feature & attraction of the #grandtour for English going abroad. King George for his part spent as little time as poss in England, an example followed by his son #kinggeorgeII who was German to his heart & soul & again no great fan of the #British or our weather; describing our summer as "three fine days & a thunder storm" His wife #QueenCaroline was better loved by the British though she ensured all their children be born in Hanover. Even our rightful king by blood JamesIII considered Caroline a kind woman. Personally I love our weather! It inspires poetry & provides flattering lighting for our completions...
