She’s one of the world’s leading experts on ideological extremism and dangerous social relationships, and she makes a very convincing case that under the right set of circumstances almost anyone can be radically manipulated to engage in otherwise incomprehensible and often dangerous acts. In this episode, she joins us to discuss her experience as a former cult member, and the relationship between neuroscience, attachment, and indoctrination.

More about today’s guest: Alexandra Stein, Ph.D. is a social psychologist, writer and educator specializing in cults, totalitarianism and extremism. She is currently a visiting research fellow at London South Bank University and has previously taught at Birkbeck University of London, Westminster University and the University of Minnesota. Dr. Stein is a trustee of The Family Survival Trust, a UK charity working to raise awareness about cults and support those affected. She is the author of two books: Terror, Love and Brainwashing: Attachment in Cults and Totalitarian Systems, and Inside Out, a memoir of Entering and Breaking out of a Minneapolis Political Cult. In the Moon cult a trinity system was used, certainly in Korea in the 1950s and ’60s. It was an effective way of controlling the members. Each had to keep an eye on the others and keep them in line and report up-line.

The Cain-Abel dynamic was also effective. Your leader was your “Abel figure” and you were Cain, and had to suppress or overcome any murderous or other negative feelings. By uniting (absolute obedience) with your “Abel figure” you could restore “Cain” and your “Cain nature”.

Moon assigned “Cain,” “Abel” and “Archangel” positions to nations; the members of those nations had fulfill goals and tasks given to them by Moon. Only in this way could the world be restored.

And Japan was “Eve” or “Mother” to Korea as “Adam”. Japan had to restore the sins of Eve by sending $billions to Sun Myung Moon and his projects.

All these roles or positions were effective means of entrapment of the members.

On joining some members were asked to “sacrifice their Isaac” – to surrender the thing they loved the most (or hand over their money).

Dr. Stein's entirely justifiable reaction to Chris's mentioning the dread James R. Lewis and J Gordon Melton et hoc genus omni (24:12 onwards) was worth the price of admission alone! ;) May Eileen Barker, Massimo Introvigne and all the other 'New Religious Movement' merchants and cult apologists be consigned to the dustbin of history as soon as possible.

Moonies ordered to compensate about 9.2 million yen for three forced marriages

TOKYO – The Tokyo District Court on Wednesday ordered the Unification Church to pay about 9.2 million yen in damages to three former followers for illegally enticing and forcing them into marriage against their will.

A lawyer for the three said it is the first time a ruling has recognized the illegality of forced participation in such arranged mass marriages and ordered the Unification Church, whose members are commonly known as “Moonies” after its founder Sun Myung Moon, to pay compensation.

The plaintiffs – two women and a man aged between 37 and 40 – had sought a total of 43 million yen.

The man and one of the two women are residents of Tokyo, while the other woman comes from Fukuoka Prefecture, southwestern Japan.

In handing down the ruling, Presiding Judge Hirotsugu Koizumi described the mass marriages as illegal and infringing on the concept of freedom in marrying. “The followers had no freedom to refuse the partners selected for them, and were made to believe that if they did not participate here, they and their ancestors would not be saved,” Koizumi said.

Koizumi said that in recruiting followers the Moonies simply wanted to get hold of people who would make use of their products, and not because they were sincerely spreading their teachings.

He added that the movement tried to inculcate fear and anxiety in its followers and confuse them enough to prevent them from breaking away.

The Unification Church said it is disappointed with the ruling and will appeal against it after studying the details. (Kyodo News)
