Portals for June: Positively the worst bog on any regular Lakeland path. From Alfred Wainwright's breathtaking seven-volume set of guides to the UK Lake District, "A Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells," 1955-1966. I believe this is from the first volume, "The Eastern Fells" (1955).

“There's no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing.” ~Alfred Wainwright, A Coast to Coast Walk Alfred Wainwright is credited with writing the original version of the saying, "There's no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing". It appeared in his 1973 book Coast to Coast.  The saying is also used in Norwegian and Swedish. In Norwegian, it's "Det finnes ikke dårlig vær, bare dårlig klær!" In Swedish, it's "Det finns inget dåligt väder, bara dåliga kläder".

Wainwright’s Coast to Coast Walk

I love Wainwright’s Guides even though I’ve never actually had the chance to use one. The handwritten text, the detailed sketch maps, the drawings of fells and sheep and the rooftops of Robin Hood Bay. They are so special and I am so glad they are still in wide use.
