Flowers for August: These neighborhood beauties, springtime, Northern California.

I don't actually know what they are! I want to say I've heard them called Japanese roses...? Please chime in if you recognize them, my plant-loving comrades! I know there are many of you, including @greycatbird , @geopsych , @bluebelly-sun-serpentine , @theplanthropologist , and @summerwages , just to name a few of you lovelies off the top of my head. Thank you, @puk128 , for what may be my first official Snapshot Ask! Apologies for the screenshot here, courtesy of my email. While industriously jettisoning spam earlier, I accidentally (and temporarily) blocked you. Onward to the (interesting) bugs and (forgotten) flowers!

First off, these oak gall wasp eggs on a Valley Oak leaf.

Second, an easily overlooked, but not actually easily forgotten, springtime flower. Here is a snapshot through a car window, where you can see that it's easy to miss.

And here's the beauty up close. Hartweg's iris, aka Rainbow iris or Sierra iris, endemic to California.
