Alice Madness Returns Dress Tutorial

Alice Liddell was my first cosplay, I am really proud of how it turned out. Back then, I think it was 4 or 5 years ago, my mum helped me sewing the hard parts :D

I will make an own tutorial for the apron.

This blue dress I sewed with a pattern I bought online http://www.burdastyle.de/burda-style/damen/retro-kleid-top-sommerkleider_pid_1100_8784.html (link to the pattern but it is German)  (the puffy sleeves I improvised). I recommend to buy a pattern and change it to your wants because it is a lot less effort.

When you make your own pattern is it really useful to have a puppet so you can pin your fabric onto it and mark the borders with chalk. 

I bought 2,5m blue cotton fabric and - how wide your fabric is, normally 114 or 140cm; lace ribbon.

Sewing: At first you have to sew the dart then sew both back parts to the left and right of the front. Then you have to fold the skirt, pin the folds with needles and iron them. When you are ready, sew with half of your seam allowance over the folds. Next sew the skirt to your front and back and the lace ribbon to the bottom of the skirt.

After that, pin the left side of the zipper to the left side of the dress and the right side to the right. Before sewing the zipper to the dress you have to sew the back seam of your skirt, up to where the zipper ends, together.

Then fold both sides of the sleeves to the needed size, pin the folds, sew once over them and iron them. 

You can also gather up the fabric.

Next fold and iron the ribbon, that is around your arm in the end, once in the middle and sew the edges together that you have a circle. Then sew the ribbon and the sleeve together.

At last sew your sleeves to your dress.

The blood spots I made with food colour because it is washable.

First sew together the shoulder seams. Then iron back all seam allowances (except for the one with the red line) and sew them back, so you have nice edges.

Before cutting out the pockets, draw the two symbols on them and embroider them with black thread. Then cut them out (+ 1cm seam allowance), fold the allowance back and sew them to the apron piece.

Now fold the apron piece that it has the same length as the front, iron the folds and sew them close to the edge. Next sew the apron piece to your front.

Then take the ribbon/belt and fold it as you can see in the pattern (4cm 4cm 2cm), fold the edge seam allowances back  and sew everything together (I sewed 3 times over it with a distance of 1,3cm).  Then sew the ribbon to the front side of the apron. I close the belt with a button and fix it with two snaps to the back piece. 

Bow: First I took all bow pieces and sewed back all seam allowances. Except the ones that get sewed to other pieces.

Then I took the two big bow pieces, folded them half, gathered them and wrapped the middle piece around them. Before sewing take the remaining ribbons, gather their upper side, too and put them between the middle part and the bow, but look out that between the bottom of the ribbons is a gap. You need to sew everything together by hand.

The bow is really floppy but wire didn't made it better. So I took the handles out of a cooler bag and folded them half. The handle gets nicely round and makes the bow look really good when you just stuck them in the middle. I put some wire in the middle, too otherwise the bow parts hung down.

I fixed the bow to my apron with wire and two snaps.

The skull I made out of Fimo. Some day I want to improve the skull because it looks not that good
