ALICE ISN’T DEAD - Part 1, Chapter 6: Sylvia Next to a gas station a couple hours north of New York City, Sylvia and her mom saw the Thistle Man, or as she knows him, as I guess the world knows him, the Hungry Man. They saw him take a man from his car. They saw what he did to that man. And her mother did what I could not. She tried to intervene, tried to get the police involved, get other people involved. After that, Sylvia didn’t have a mother. She went back to Georgia, was moved from home to home. No one would believe her story of what was out there, of what she had seen. Or no one would admit that they believed her.
ALICE ISN’T DEAD - Part 1, Chapter 5: Signs & Wonders Well, well, well, well now. It wasn’t The Thistle Man that left me these billboards, was it? It was someone else. Go home why, hm? Because I’m not safe? You think I’m safe anywhere? You think you can keep me safe? You think safety is an option that’s available to me? I haven’t been safe since I was born into this country, this angry, seething, stupid, could-be-so-much-more-than-it-is country. And you’re gonna keep me safe? Or because I would get in the way? Or because you don’t want me to look for you, and I should respect your feelings.
ALICE ISN’T DEAD - Part 1, Chapter 4: The Factory by the Sea And that's where I am now. Driving, as I always am when we talk. ... We? Of course we don't talk. I do. You vanish. You aren't. You are a gap, a nothing, and I talk into that nothing. I let my words float away, like Jackie on the waves, like ... like Jack on the waves. I let my words vanish, and I just keep driving.
ALICE ISN’T DEAD - Part 1, Chapter 3: Nothing to See He knew about you. I don't know what else he knew. I gave up then. I shouldn't have, but I was out of energy. I'd been searching for you for so long. All those miles upon me, and now this monster. And then ... and then I didn't give up. I gathered myself. Fuck the Thistle Man! I kicked and I screamed and I used every bit of energy and movement I had. I wouldn't go down quiet.
ALICE ISN’T DEAD - Part 1, Chapter 2: Alice A fire outside of Tacoma, a landslide in Thousand Oaks, a hostage situation in St. Joseph. Earnest folks speaking earnestly, describing only the bad parts of the world. And in the background ... you. Just for a moment sometimes or sometimes long and staring. You, over and over. I made a list of every place I saw you on the news, and that list became a map of America.
ALICE ISN’T DEAD - Part 1, Chapter 1: Omelet Where are you, Alice? Why can’t I find you? I’ll keep driving this truck. I’ll keep wandering this country. I’m going to find you. I will. Hopefully I’ll do it before the Thistle Man finds me. Every time I look behind, I worry that the headlights I see are him, and his strange dirty hands are on the wheel, pointing them at me, going faster and faster.
