Alice Baber, “The Song of the Wind,” 1977, 50 x 30. The story of the post-War female artists remains an open book, as new discoveries and rediscoveries are being made every day. One of these is Alice Baber. Wife of the Abstract Expressionist painter Paul Jenkins, Baber was an accomplished and noted painter in her own right. Unfortunately, she died young, of cancer, at the age of 54 in 1982. Baber was known for her exploration of the interplay between color and light. She told one critic that she was looking for “a way to get the light moving across the whole thing.” Her technique was a near unique combination of stain—letting the color soak in and recede—and topical painting. He work is in several noted museum collections. ALICE BABER (1928-1982) “Baber's canvases, shown here and abroad in many solo exhibitions, radiantly fused light and color by means of ovoid shapes that streamed across the painting field, seeming to float in limitless space. In New York, her work is in the permanent collections of the Guggenheim, Whitney and Metropolitan museums, as well as the Museum of Modern Art.” -1982, New York Times obituary.
