Some quick sketches of Ampris during her gladiator days!
I am rereading the “Alien Chronicles” trilogy (again), and my goodness, the writing is so good. I always slightly forget how engaging it is, and it’s always a treat. Deborah Chester writes in a way that makes you feel like you’re right there, experiencing it all yourself. Colors, textures, and scents are all described with such vivid terms.
I didn’t realize how much her style influenced me until when I went back to work on Abeyance, chapter 3. I always wanted to craft such vivid imagery when I wrote, and I’m so grateful I was able to experience that trilogy when I did, and can continue to do so for years to come.
Back at it again with Ampris’ design.
The Alien Chronicles!
@birdskull-fr! A friend of mine got me the epub editions of the books!
A commission of characters from the Lucasfilms “Alien Chronicles” series. Way back when the books were first released some artwork of the characters was done by Terryl Whitlatch. I like a lot of her work, but I honestly thought her designs were kind of ugly. Like she’d been told to make the characters as unappealing as possible. I was commissioned by another fan of the books to try my hand at the characters, which was a lot of fun to work on. I really wished they’d continued the series... *sigh*
A couple of bust doodles of Elrabin, from Lucasfilm’s Alien Chronicles.
I stuck pretty close to Terryl Whitlatch’s sketches, instead of her finished painting of him. As much as I like the finished portrait on the back of the second book, her sketches feel more like him.
I decided to post her sketches along with mine for comparison’s sake since they are no longer available online, to my surprise and disappointment. :(
I still really, really love this painting of one of the Samparese gladiatrices from Alien Chronicles despite the mistakes I see in it now.
I kind of squee whenever someone draws snaky-looking Viis.
