I have been having a lot of very strange dreams lately.
Last night I dreamt I was walking up a strange white-sand beach/dune. I walked past an odd, reddish pool, which I thought might be acid, which had a snakelike thing in it. A few steps further on, and I looked back to see the snake thing roll or flop oddly out of the pool and snare a shuffling groundbat creature. I wasn’t bothered, though, and kept walking up the path made of round white depressions in the sand.
When I crested the dune, there was a building in front of me. I didn’t exactly see it, though, so much as know it was there. Then I was inside it, and walking along a giant gantry across a huge chasm. Hovering to one side of the—actually that’s not quite right. Hovering is the wrong word. Looming?—Looming outside of the gantry was a strange … being. A vast, huge edifice. It looked like a vast, building-sized diamond made of something between black metal and spun glass, and it had tendrils all over it. Fine, wispy feeler-hairs, that sort of thing. On the underside, two bigger tendrils emerged, with what looked like wet, shrivelled flower heads on top. I had it in my head these were its mouths.
(I then asked my sister, when I woke up this morning, if I could maybe tell the gender of the creature if they were flowers. She’s a horticulturist, you see. Apparently the answer is, depending on the type of flower, whether they were actually flowerheads and not just flower-looking things, and because it had two of them, it could be either male, female, both or neither, and what the hell kind of question was that to be asking first thing after you get up?)
Either way, the thing was clearly supposed to be there, although I did get a general impression that not a lot of people knew what it was. I’d passed the end of the gantry by this point, and I shrugged it off and went to find my colleagues.
Apparently I worked there, yes. It felt like a vast MiB alien-hub type gig, but significantly more towards the Lovecraftian end? Architecture from WH40K sort of thing.
I went to a meeting room, with an older, middle-aged friend with short grey hair cheerfully towing someone along behind me. When we arrived, though, a stressed-looking man tried to head her off, tried to pull her aside before she got into the room. She wasn’t having it. She went inside …
… and then we were in a ship. Ish. We were in a strange greenish metal ship/pod thing, and we were going to get back the friend the organisation had apparently ‘lost’. (To his credit, the stressed-looking man was among the ‘we’). We were not remotely supposed to be doing this. The ship/pod thing was held in liquid, greenish-black water, and it was sort of … birthed (brain, WTF?) out through a muscley feeder-tube into a void like the huge diamond-flower-being had been in. Of which there were apparently several. There was a gate hanging in the middle of the void, a sort of white nebula-looking thing in the middle of the space, and then we were through it into …
… a long, water-filled, submerged corridor. Big enough for ships, with green walls and huge, art-deco green arches along its length. When we arrived, something tiny detached itself off the back of our ship/pod thing. This felt like watching an episode of something, because I’m pretty sure I wasn’t supposed to know that. Then the arches down one side of the corridor closed off, curtains of green plasma closing through the water, and several spikier looking ship/pods appeared down the other side of the corridor. Welcoming committee. And then …
My weekend alarm went off (in the form of family members informing me it was nearly eleven). Damn it.
For the record, I have not been watching MiB, Stargate, Event Horizon, or anything else remotely similar lately. Brain, was there a particular reason you threw this confection up now?
… It was admittedly very cool, though.
