just out of curiosity (because I used to be a huge warriors fan but I haven't read anything in years) what were the uncomfortable messages you were talking about? ^.^
I was probably just reading into it (a pause for everyone to groan)
It was a series that intended to have a lot of moral conflicts and drama, but there were subtle things that really got on my nerves after a while. Most notably, the cat Mothwing was an atheist (though not officially labelled as such, but she was by all standards), and it was portrayed that she was unable to do her job and thoroughly train her apprentice because she was atheist. The problem is that their Gods, Starclan, are clearly canon. It really rubs me the wrong way how “poor misguided Mothwing does her job so well except she can’t commune with Starclan because she’s not religious.”
And I was excited when there was a blind character introduced as a narrator, and at first he wanted to adapt to the warrior life and be trained, but then haha no he’s only fit to be a medicine cat and not fight because he’s blind and eventually he wanted that too.
I know it plays up tensions for drama, but it kind of lost its charm when I started connecting things like their religion and their clan divisions to real life parallels. It’s a series for kids so I feel like it’s even worse to have these subtle messages that they won’t analyze but might internalize.
