I started developing characters for Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland back in spring 2015 and produced 7 illustrations and a cover since 2016. This trial scene is the latest and also a final piece, featuring six characters which appeared in my earlier illustrations. The Queen of Hearts is outraged about her stolen tarts and the innocent Hatter is desperately trying his best not to look nervous (as we all know the Queen has only one way of solving issues).
I must have made a hundred edits on this drawing (one must be mad as a Hatter to create a detailed interior piece in charcoal without any ruler!). Hatter is one extraordinary weirdo, unpredictably childish and incredibly cheerful in my version. While I enjoyed the process of developing characters for this story, I admit there is a lot for me to learn about character design and storytelling. Illustrating Alice has been a great challenge, however, and I am happy I tried.
In my very last blog post, I would like to share a few photos from the launch of my debut picture book 'I Love You, Bunny' (Lincoln Children's Books) and the beautiful 'Yellow Kayak' writen by Nina Laden and illustrated by Melissa Castrillon. It was held on the 28th of February at the wonderful Heffers bookshop in Cambridge, UK. Sadly, Nicola Kent could not attend the event due to the snow and freezing weather, but her lovely debut book 'The Strongest Mum' was there with us!
Please look out for these picture books in your local bookshop in the UK and the US. You can also order them online. Thanks so much for following my journey! You can still find me on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.
