Book recommendation

Liesmith by Alis Franklin. It is a very good, very gay story about Norse gods in Australia. Short version is Loki gets a boyfriend and shenanigans happen. It seems pretty accurate to the mythology. I highly recommend it.

Author Alis Franklin interviewed at New York ComicCon

Alis Franklin, author of the urban fantasy novels LIESMITH and STORMBRINGER, was interviewed in national media last week while attending New York ComicCon. Sara was at NYCC also and is thrilled to share Alis’s complete interview at Suvudu.

“A work of contemporary fantasy, the world of Liesmith is one in which the Norse gods live and work about humans…”

The interviewer went on to ask Alis about gender, sexuality and Norse mythology. Alis, “…believes that gender and sexuality are fluid, and felt that her fiction should represent that. Loki is an ideal character to explore these ideas, really.”

Help, fandoms keep mushing together in my head

OK, so last night I went to see a livestream performance of the Rocky Horror Show and it was awesome and emotional and reminded me of how much I idolise Richard O’Brien because he’s this amazing, intelligent, soft spoken person when he’s not performing and, hey, non binary, and generally I just love the fuck out of him.

Ahem. Anyway.

Because I’ve been quietly obsessing over Liesmith for weeks and weeks (months, maybe?) now, I cannot stop thinking about Lain and Sigmund (and Wayne and Em) going to a midnight showing. 

Like, Wayne and Em already being gung ho about it, costumed up and everything (Em as Magenta, Wayne rocking it as Frank-N-Furter), and Lain being amused because, shit, he did this a million times back in the 70s and 80s when it first came out and are people still doing this? but OK, awesome, fun, and nearly going as Magenta because, hey, easy with the hair, but Magenta is Em’s thing, and Frank-N-Furter is Wayne’s, and so fuck it, he’ll go as Rocky, and Sig being all nervous and awkward and thinking at first that maybe he wouldn’t get dressed up, or maybe he’d put on a cheap suit and go as a Transylvanian, but then everyone else is going in costumes, and finally agreeing to let the others dress him up, but it’s not Brad or Eddie or anyone he’d been expecting, it’s Janet they’ve dressed him as, blonde wig and all, and then he realises that means that he and Lain are kind of going as a matching pair and getting really giddy about that and forgetting his worries and having a blast.

And now I really, really want to draw non-human Lain dressed up as Frank-N-Furter.

I should have passed right the heck out an hour and a half ago, except I’m enjoying this book too darn much. It is absolutely going on the LGBT book list that anon asked for as soon as I get around to collecting all the info for it.

Stormbringer

I just finished reading Stormbringer: Book 2 of the Wyrd by Alis Franklin this afternoon. Loved it. Go! Go and read it! Now! (That is, unless you haven’t read her first book: Liesmith: Book 1 of the Wyrd then go read that first.)

I came across Liesmith quite by accident last year and became an instant fan. How often does one come across an Australian urban fantasy romance situated around Norse mythology about two dudes and one has historically always been considered the villain? It was warm, funny, smart, sweet and just awesome. 

Enter Stormbringer, which I pre-ordered as soon as I heard about it. Again, warm and smart and funny and sweet and AWESOME! Plus one of the dudes is such a snarky smartass and I love him for it. Neither character is perfect, which just adds to the charm of the whole thing and doesn’t drag it down. Plus the various side-characters just add to the fun of the adventure.

I wish I could give a more coherent review, but I don’t seem have the finesse. I just loved the books, they worked for me in every way. I can’t wait for Book 3 and I’m sure you can guess, I have already pre-ordered it.

So go, read these books.
