When Alison proposed movie night, Elijah knew better than to delve any deeper into the intentions. The town was still reeling from the break ins, and he felt antsy enough in his own apartment, even with Annie in the other room, that he knew Alison must be going slightly crazy in a place all her own. Not that he was the type who would ever bring up the topic, but if Allison wanted to have someone else in her apartment for a couple hours - just so she wouldn’t be alone - he was more than willing to accommodate. 

“I wasn’t sure what was in your fridge, so I brought Blue Moon,” he explained, as he came in through the front door, carrying a six pack. “Hope that’s okay.”

It was a little past midnight when Casey began knocking, with a frantic energy, at Alison’s door, not giving much thought to whether or not he was disturbing her sleep or whatever activity she was doing if she was still awake. “Alison! Unpacking had beaten the shit out of Pierre. His whole body ached, and even after about ten Advil, his compromised shoulder lit up with a hardly dulled stabbing. Actually being beaten was only slightly worse than the way fatigue felt it entered his bones. 

The library was a solace, London, Paris, New York, they all smelled the same. The pulp of the paper felt the same under his rough finger tips, the temperature of the room was always just a bit cold for his liking.

Shelves upon shelves he searched, with his finely tuned collectors eye. He was awfully dedicated to this though in a past life it had just been a cover.  He had even searched the children’s section, where he found a third edition of a Beatrix Potter book that might go for a good amount. They joined his stack, one a Walt Whitman he knew had a limited print, and the last a poorly bound cookbook from 1810. 

Pierre approached the checkout desk with the books and twenty-eight dollars in his hand.

“’ow much did you want for the cookbook? It doesn’ have a price on it.”

Sawyer was straining against the weight in his arms, biting back a groan as the coarse wood bit into his dry hands. The process of flipping his bookstore by himself was taking twice as long as he expected, and twice as much money. Not to mention the storm setting him back and also sending a branch through his window and damaging the new hardwood floors that he’d painstakingly put in himself a week before. He paused at the door to his shop, playing out the various scenarios of attempting to open the door with his hands so full of plywood. He turned around, seeking out a friendly face walking past him on the street. “Ma’am? I’m sorry, can you do me a huge favor?” He stepped aside and gestured sheepishly to the door. “Can you pull that open for me please? It’s an actual miracle that I haven’t dropped all of this on my foot as it is,” he admitted.

Maisie watched PJ playing from the bench, a thermos of coffee curled in her hands as her brows furrowed at the sight of her son all alone on the swings. “Do you think it’s weird the way he doesn’t seem to be getting past this?” she asked her friend, the question coming suddenly without her thoughts spoken to provide context. “I mean- he’s always been shy, but he’s been more... withdrawn since his father died. I thought he’d be past it more by now...”
