Ah yes, the good old freelancer life: Living with your boyfriend because a pandemic has taken away your main source of income and youâre absolutely not beneath eating someone elseâs fridge empty. At least Markus isnât.

âAnd whatâs that supposed to be when youâre done?,â Alois asked. His legs rested on the breakfast table. His cup of coffee rested between his legs and stomach.
Markus didnât take his eye away from the viewfinder. âA picture,â he said. He took one and looked at it on his cameraâs display.
âThat you can make a print out of to sell? Of the invalid to some people who need misery porn or diversity on their walls?â
âOh, but of course,â Markus said as he pressed some buttons on his camera, his eyes fixed onto the display while he smirked. âIf I put a few filters on it and add an effect here and there in photoshop, I could make it look like youâre actually miserable and Iâm some socio-critical photo reporter.â
Alois threw his head back and laughed. Markus sat down across the table from him.
âAre you actually making any money off this?,â Alois asked before he sipped at his coffee.
âNo, not at all,â Markus said. âWhich you should know since Iâve been basically living here for a week.â He smiled at him with a bitter sparkle in his eyes.
âHuh, true. Theyâre good pictures, though.â
âThatâs true, but right now isnât quite the time where people have the money to splurge it on art. Itâs more an optimistic attempt to see any money, really, until the big events that I usually live off come back.â
âYou really donât have anything to do?,â Alois asked. âNot that I mind having you around.â
âQuick to save that one,â Markus commented. âAnd no I donât. Thereâs no big weddings, thereâs no birthdays, no public business events, no cultural stuff and thereâs no first communions.â
Alois frowned. âFirst communions? Thatâs where you made your money from?â
âYes, they bring in a lot of money in the more rural areas, you know, the suburbs of vienna. People pay good money for stunning pictures of their kidsâ rite of passage out there.â
âYeah, I know I had one. My dad took pictures and I remember that I was happy about the cake and all the money, but not that I couldnât play football that day,â Alois said.
Markus laughed. âAnd, how did those pictures your dad took turn out?â
âGood enough for our kitchen wall and the ones of my grandmasâ,â Alois replied, which only intensified the grin on Markusâ face. âBecause we didnât need to brag to our neighbours who had the better communion. If youâre looking for a job, ask my sister, because Iâm sure that if Sissiâs current ass kisser is unfortunate enough to get her pregnant, sheâs going to blast that kidâs life onto social media for internet points like hell.â Alois took another sip of coffee. âAlthough -â
âI think youâre doing your sister wrong,â Markus said.
âI know my sister did me wrong, donât worry about her. Anyways, if youâre still around when she gets married, you better donât offer yourself to her, because sheâll try to get your skills for free for sure. And that ainât paying your rent, plus she has no business not paying you because youâre dating me. Somebody should pay you for sticking around this family.â
âWell, you kind of are my sugar daddy,â Markus said and Alois nearly spit out his coffee. âWell, sugar boyfriend. Trophy boyfriend. I donât know how you call those old guys who get a girlfriend that is clearly only with them for the money.â Markus got up again.
âLugner? I donât know,â Alois said and Markus snorted. âIâll gladly take care of a poor artist, though.â Markus picked up his camera and walked over to Alois. Without a word, he gently nudged at his legs. Alois raised an eyebrow, but pulled them off the table. His feet were barely on the ground when Markus sat down on his lap. âOh,â Alois said. He grinned. âEspecially when youâre gonna be like that, Mausi.â
Markus laughed and Alois wrapped his arm around his waist. He kissed him on the lips. Afterwards, Markus kissed him on the cheek. Alois heard the click of the camera.
âOh, I see, youâre still trying to make bucks,â he said. âAnd whoâs that for?â
âThatâs just for us,â Markus said and put the camera down on the table.
