I really like The Line! It was really weird at first but it is definitely a grower, can’t wait to hear it in position on the album.
I don’t know if this falls into creepy territory (though I’m only using Wikipedia) but one thing that jumped out at me even when I saw the leaked lyrics was that Dave seemed to include a shoutout to Nate’s two-year old son. Which is adorable.
For some context, on the eve of the blood moon in September 2015 during the craziest tour in the Foos’ 22 years, Nate Mendel was sitting on a tour bus travelling somewhere in the middle of the American midwest and got a call from his wife. She had gone into labour. The band dropped him off at the nearest airport and he flew home to attend the birth of his son. Then he FLEW BACK and made the Foos gig in Oklahoma City the next night. Dave tells the story better. Anyway, seems the Mendels (partially) named their baby after the cosmic event that happened the day of his birth.
To tie this back to The Line, the song has a lyric that pretty much has to be a reference to this. Which is pretty cute but made me wonder why? I think I figured it out.
The whole theme of the song is urgency and desperation, which goes with the theme Dave has said works its way through the whole C&G album. Dave said he was worried about his kids and the future, just like we all are in these crazy fucked-up times. “Everything is on the line this time”. What is on the line? A viable existence for future generations. Future generations perfectly represented by the youngest member of the band’s little extended family. “a Blood Moon born in the dead of night.” Aww
In what ever year it is next, I plan to get more hats.
