Leonard had started the day in a fairly average way. He got to work, worried about Archer and James (who were both on a mission, and while Bones knew they could handle themselves, his nature was still to worry about them), did some paperwork, and starts to do his daily rounds on long term care patients. Despite all the super humans in SHIELD's purview, they still had plenty of squishy humans working for them who would need more than a day or two in medical.

Thankfully, it doesn't take long to check in on the patients. It means he has a small break before going to triage. Leonard makes good use of the break for some food, water, and coffee. He has a feeling he's going to need it. The medic is finishing off patching up an agent who just needed minor care when an agent gets him to hurry to the part of medbay where James and Archer are.

Len is both relieved that the two are back (he missed them, so what, sue him) but distinctly worried even as he runs to the room the agent told him. His gut was telling him something was very wrong. Those two rarely seemed needed more than a small patch job, but if they're in a room...

He runs a little faster, heart pounding and almost not hearing the various shouts already coming from the room. Leonard skids to a stop and slams open the door, really not expecting the raw carnage that assaults his senses. "What in hellfire..." He blinks a few moments to let his brain process and then he's in full doctor-mode.

"Tranq!" he shouts at an agent. Once it's in hand, he carefully maneuvers so he can get Archer before James suffers more. "Sorry about this, Archer," Leonard says as he shoots the bowman.

"Make sure he get's treated and treated right--I will be checking," Bones barks at a few other medics before turning his attention to how battered James is. He's gentle as he starts to categorize wounds. "It's okay, James. We're gonna fix you up real well. Archer will be fine. Do you think we can get you onto a table? You've got some really bad injuries, but the floor is really not the place," Leonard says as he moves to get James settled on the bed that had been for Archer.

"It's just biological functions--not that nightmarish," he said with a shrug.

“Fortunately, your liver will thank you in a few years,” Bones replies glibly before sighing and rubbing a hand over his face and through his hair. “What’s eating at you, James?”

Tony frowns deeply at his son, but it’s not in disappointment. Nor is it pity, because he intimately knew the kind of heartache that his son was expressing. Felt it more times than he cared to count. Drowned himself in the bottle as James apparently was trying to do. 

“Sweetheart, James, apple of my eye” Tony starts as he hurries to get a glass of water and a snack. Sure, James might not really need it, but it keeps Tony from shouting at his son. Keeps him from asking who  he has to go punch in the nose for treating his boy in such a way. “Why would you say something like that?” . But first, he has to take care of James. 

He holds out the glass of water, hoping James isn’t so sloshed as to stumble for it. “What happened?”

Leonard yawns as he stumbles into the medbay that morning. He's clinging to a thermos of coffee for dear life. His hair is a bit messy, and he's got some scruff from over the weekend that he just couldn't have been bothered to shave this morning. Not like there was a solid uniform here like he had back in the Army. Thank god for small favors, because Leonard just couldn't be bothered to really do anything.

His weekend was shit. Nightmares abounding and it meant he got very little sleep and was more than a little depressed. However, he still had a job to do, so he sucked it up like he always did and got ready to go into SHIELD where he was dreading coming into contact with Archer or James. They'd probably question his slightly haggard appearance and given both were SHIELD, Leonard would be unable to successfully lie to them.

But he wouldn't want to any way. The two lads were his friends, as well as subtle reminders of Jim and Spock. When Leonard looks at Archer and James it's like Jim and Spock were telling him they'd always be there with him in some way shape or form. To be fair, there were really only flashes because Archer and James were so vastly different from Bones' late lovers. He thought it would be a disservice to everyone involved if he thought of those two as replacements for his lost friends. Archer and James were beautifully unique and wonderfully human in ways Jim and Spock never could be; and Leonard loved that.

Len smiles softly at the thoughts of the men in his life as he sits down to work on a mountain of reports. By now, he has worked for SHIELD long enough to have been slightly promoted from grunt work (given that he was the primary medic and sometimes medic to two of their top agents, Len thought it was only appropriate). But, reports still had to be filed to there he found himself.

He sets a steady, rhythmic pace as he works--sign here, short medical explanations there, date and sign here, look up the notes on the visit and so on. Even with the coffee, Leonard feels his eyelids trying to shut on him. He lets out a deep sigh, eyeing the clock that tells him he's been working for a few hours and could shut his eyes for a few moments as his allotted break time.

Bones sighs and stretches a little before setting aside the reports. He feels a little embarrassed to be sleeping at his desk like a tired med student, but it'd take more of his break time to find a quieter and more comfortable place. Besides, it's a slow day and he hasn't actually seen that many people around. With that, he folds his arms and rests his head on them. Leonard falls asleep almost instantly, not even remembering to set an alarm.

He dreams.

He dreams of Jim and Spock. He dreams of lazy days where they would just lounge and be. He dreams of sea-side vacations where the breeze stirs something between them. He dreams of the hot sun and the sand. The air is so hot and dry. The shrieks from others also enjoying the beach.

A crease finds its way onto his brow for the air is too too hot and dry for it to be the tropical paradise that he remembers...and those shrieks of jubilation...screams of terror. All at once the beautiful day at the beach is plunged into smoke and dirt and tears and blood. All at once his dream of peace and serenity and happiness is dragged through the muck and mire into his own personal hell.

Even though he knows what's coming, he's still too slow. A scream rips through his chest as the shock-wave knocks him on his ass. 

"JIM!" he screams, jolting awake. His hazel eyes are wide and unseeing, brimming with tears. Leonard is still trying to come back to the present unaware of another person near, as the thermos drips coffee on the floor.

Tony feels his heart breaking for his son. He knew that being a Stark was a hard life, and hell, having him and Steve for parents probably didn’t help matters; but Tony had done his best with Steve to give James as damn good childhood (better than his parents’ childhoods at any rate). 

Tony sighs and frowns, tilting his head slightly to regard his boy whose heart seemed to be breaking. “Kiddo, I’m not sure who brought this on, but I can tell you one thing, if it doesn’t last, then it’s completely their loss. Relationships are hard, no doubt and I wouldn’t want to sugar coat it for you, but if they aren’t willing to see how amazing and great you are, then they don’t deserve you.” 

Tony pulls James in for a hug. “Besides, it’s totally okay to not be okay with that. Howard would probably have said that we’re made of iron and so emotions have no place for us, but fuck that bastard,” Tony says and runs a calming hand through James’ hair like he had when his son was younger.

“You don’t have to be okay with having your heart broken time and time again, son. Just remember that it’s how you pick yourself up that really matters. And you know that your dad and I will always be here for you as well; you don’t have to go it alone.”
