King Barlowe
Edward ‘King’ Barlowe had been a prominent and powerful mobster in Gotham who amassed a great fortune through racketeering and forgery. At the time of his death it was believed that his wealth had exceeded over two-hundred and fifty million dollars.
Barlowe hated The Joker and he and the clown prince of crime had a longstanding rivalry. Which is why it was a great surprise to everyone that Barlowe willed the entirety of his fortune to The Joker upon his death.
Suddenly The Joker was fabulously wealthy and he went on a huge spending spree, buying off judges, lawyers and psychologists so to expunge his criminal record and purchasing all manner frivolous expenditures.
After The Joker had spent huge sums of this money, an agent of the Internal Revenue Service appeared to collect a hefty inheritance tax. And it was it this point that The Joker realized that most of the money Barlowe had left him were actually crudely manufactured counterfeit bills. The Joker also discovered a video tape that Barlowe had previously recorded. On the tape, the mobster explained that it had all been a joke; he knew The Joker would blow all of the real money right away and would have nothing left to pay off the IRS. He would have to explain to the government that he had been conned so to avoid charges of tax evasion. And everyone would know that Barlowe had made a fool of The Joker.
An irate Joker desperately pulled together a caper to steal the funds necessary to pay of the IRS so that no one would know that Barlowe had gotten one over on him. Yet he was caught in the act by Batman and Batgirl and his plans were ruined. The Joker was a criminal again and sent back to Arkham... and now everyone knew that ol’ King Barlowe had gotten the last laugh on his rival.
Actor Allan Rich provided the voice for Barlowe with the late mobster appearing in the seventh episode of the first season of the New Batman Adventures, ‘Joker’s Millions.’
