So, this pilot for Mrs. Columbo, this “Word Games.” It has Kate Mulgrew. It has Robert Culp. It has Edie Adams. It has Bob Dishy. It has a host of other good people. It has the car. It has Dog. It does not have Columbo. But, it also has a great deal of unpleasantness. A great deal of missed opportunity. The whole thing is just odd and confounding, so much so that Jon and RJ actually go through an episode in chronological order FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER. Historian and author Amanda Reyes (Are You In The House Alone?: A TV Movie Compendium 1964-1999) is back on the program, to help sort through the whole mess. One of the many oddities inherent in Mrs.Columbo’s often-jarring pilot episode is this thematically-challenging outro. If you couldn’t make it through the episode all the way to the end -- and, believe you us, we understand completely -- what you missed was this: After Mrs.Columbo blows up a whole house in order to kill the murderer who’s been engaging her in a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse, we fade out on her clutching a wall in depserate relief, panting and shaking with still-lingering terror and fade in to her PTA Talent Show performance, involving a tap routine with her and her daughter. Ah. Of course, a famous cinematic technique. This whole series was bugnuts.

Rene Auberjonois as French instructor Monsieur Gerard, Edie Adams as fat-shamed victim Joanne Huston, Barney Martin as veterinarian Dr.Prinz, Frederic Forest as the murderous Martin, Neil Flanagan as the Mailman, the great Robert Culp as homicidal husband Charles Huston, Allan Rich as the put-upon garage foreman, Lili Hadyn as Jenny Columbo, Bob Dishy as Sgt.Norriss and Herb Armstrong as The Gardener.
Not pictured: Henry Jones as editor Josh Alden, Priscilla Pointer as Mrs.Prior, Miriam Nelson as the ballet instructor and Christopher Allport as a telephone man who is impressively blase about eavesdropping on the neighbors.
