CRE treatment to be developed, sold by Allergan, AstraZeneca #DrBondApp Pediatrics Pharmaceutical industry #Allergan and AstraZeneca recently partnered to develop and commercialize a drug candidate containing aztreonam and avibactam for the treatment of infections caused by metallo beta-lactamase (MBL)-producing gram-negative #pathogens, a subtype of carbapenem-resistant #Enterobacteriaceae, according to a press release. Aztreonam and avibactam (ATM/AVI) was developed by AstraZeneca and the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) under the organizations’ 5-year strategic alliance to advance a range of therapies for illnesses caused by bioterrorism agents and #antibiotic-resistant infections. Aztreonam offers activity against MBL-producing gram-negative pathogens, but is inactivated by pathogens expressing serine-beta-lactamase #enzymes, according to the release. Adding avibactam to the formulation restores activity against pathogens that co-produce MBLs and serine enzymes. The #drug combination is currently being evaluated in a phase 2 trial, COMBACTE-CARE, sponsored by the European Union’s Innovative Medicines Initiative. Under the agreement, Allergan will have commercialization rights to the therapy in the United States and Canada, while AstraZeneca will hold rights in all other countries. “This collaboration represents an important milestone in the development of ATM-AVI,” Hans Sijbesma, managing director of the #antibiotic business unit for AstraZeneca, said in the release. “Antimicrobial resistance is a huge global health challenge, which is increasingly at the forefront of the public health agenda. We look forward to working with health authorities to help bring this much-needed new treatment option to patients.”..
