[:nl]Een poosje geleden is de Coolermaster C700p uit gekomen, sindsdien zijn er al heel wat Mods met deze geweldige case gemaakt die de grenzen van de mogelijkheden in deze case proberen op te zoeken. Tot nu toe lijken die grenzen nog steeds niet in zicht, maar de pogingen om die grenzen te vinden zijn al prachtig om te zien. Dit artikel gaat over “Bugatti” gemaakt door Bernardo Mod Chop.

De Bugatti gebruikt de “schoorsteen” layout van de C700p, dit zorgt ervoor dat de connectoren allemaal boven in de case uitkomen. Deze configuratie zorgt voor een uiterlijk dat je niet snel in andere cases dan deze C700p zult zien. Uiteraard is dit een standaard optie in de case dus wellicht niet heel bijzonder te noemen. Het heeft echter wel voor een hele mooie ruimte in de achterzijde van de case gezorgd, alwaar ik het eerste tegenkwam dat er voor zorgde dat ik over deze Mod wilde schrijven.

De achterzijde van de C700p is in deze Bugatti vervangen voor een groot reservoir. Dit reservoir lijkt en is nu geheel onderdeel van de structuur van de case op zich en laat ruimte genoeg in de case open voor andere dingen. Met de blauwe vloeistof erin ben ik benieuwd hoe mooi de case eruit ziet als het licht er vanaf achter in valt, maar daar heb ik geen fotos van. Dit reservoir is onderdeel van een simpel uitziende loop, in deze loop zitten in serie twee grafische kaarten en de CPU verbonden. De loop word gekoeld door een redelijk dik uitziende radiator, waaraan de buizen in de bovenzijde verbonden zijn. Waarschijnlijk om kleur overkill te voorkomen is er gekozen om de helft van de loop in chromen buizen uit te voeren, terwijl de andere helft de blauwe vloeistof mooi laat zien. Een ietwat vreemde gewaarwording is het lege reservoir in de bodem van de zichtbare case. Deze pomp/reservoir combi is verbonden met de radiator, maar in plaats van het reservoir gedeelte te gebruiken,  is er een chromen buis rechtstreeks door het reservoir getrokken om te verbinden met het custom reservoir in de achterzijde. Geen idee waarom dit gedaan is, misschien had Bernardo Mod Chop geen losse pompen, maar aan de andere kant zorgt dit wel voor een van die dingetjes waardoor deze Mod juist weer opvalt in de massa.

De Bugatti is zeer mooi blauw geverfd en heeft diverse covers in carbon stijl om de delen af te dekken die niet vol in zicht hoeven te zijn. Zoals de voeding en de bekabeling en dat soort dingetjes. De zichtbare bekabeling in deze Bugatti is tevens in een mooie carbon grijze kleur te zien, hoewel je door de “schoorsteen” layout nog minder kabels te zien krijgt als normaal. De kabels vanaf de grafische kaarten loopt zeer netjes weg richting achterzijde van de case en zorgen voor een soort balans in de lijnen van de gehele Mod. De nu al zeer herkenbare handvatten zijn glanzend chroom gemaakt wat een geweldig mooi contrast met het blauw oplevert. Op de voorzijde geflankeerd door chroomkleurige strips maakt het Bugatti logo de gehele voorkant af. Hiervoor is het Coolermaster logo verwijderd uit het zicht, maar de iedereen die de case ziet zal hem toch wel herkennen.

Tot slot, jullie weten onderhand wel dat ik ook altijd wat te zeiken moet hebben en dat is in deze Bugatti ook het geval. De enige overeenkomst die ik persoonlijk zie tussen de Bugatti chiron auto’s en deze Mod is het kleuren schema, en zelfs dan alleen als je specifiek kijkt naar blauwe Bugatti’s, ik mis eigenlijk de geweldige ronde lijn die over de deuren van de Bugatti Chiron loopt. Dus waarom deze naam en logo gekozen zijn weet ik niet helemaal. Inspiratie kan overal vandaan komen en in allerlei vormen uitkomen uiteraard dus aan de andere kant snap ik het ook wel. Maar om deze reden heb ik deze case niet opgenomen in de “based on a car” serie die op deze site ook te vinden is.

Bernardo Mod Chop – Facebook[:en]A while back the C700p case was introduced, since then quite a number of Mods have been made with this marvelous case as it’s base seeking the limitations in this case. So far those limitations still seem far out of reach or even non-existent, but the attempts to find those boundaries truly are works of art already. This article is about “Bugatti” made by Bernardo Mod Chop.

The Bugatti uses the “Chimney” layout of the C700p, this makes all the connectors from the back i/o end up in the top of the case. This configuration makes for a sight which you will not find easily in other cases besides this C700p. Of course, this happens to be a standard option, in this case, so we can not call this very special. It did, however, create a very nice space in the back of the case, where I found the first thing that drew me in to start writing about this Mod.

The backside of the C700p has been replaced by a large reservoir in this Bugatti. This reservoir seems and actually is now a part of the case’s structure, and leaves enough room in the case open for other nice things. With the blue liquid in that reservoir I for one am curious as to how beautiful the coloring in the case will end up when the light falls into the case from that backside, sadly I haven’t found any photos of this phenomenon. The reservoir is part of a simple looking loop, within this loop two graphics cards and the CPU are cooled. The liquid is cooled by a reasonably thick radiator in the front of the case with the attached tubing coming out in the top of the radiator. Probably to counter the color overkill the tubing was made half in chrome and the other half in a transparent tubing, showing off that nice looking blue liquid. A somewhat strange view is the empty reservoir in the bottom of the visible case. This Pump/reservoir combi is connected to the radiator, but instead of using the reservoir part of it a chrome tube has been connected straight from the pump to the reservoir in the back of the case. No idea why this was done this way, maybe he was out of separate pumps, but on the other hand, this does create one of those things that’ll make you remember this Mod.

Painted in a gorgeous blue, with carbon style cover here and there to hide things that don’t need to be in sight such as cables and PSU, This Bugatti is really a sight to behold. The visible cables in this Bugatti are also in that nice carbon grey color, even though the “chimney” leaves even fewer cables in sight than normal. The cables powering the graphics cards go in a horizontal line to the back of the case where they drop off behind the motherboard tray. The horizontal line this creates generates a balance in the overall lines of the entire Mod. The already very recognizable handles on the C700p have been made a nice shiny chrome, which makes for an excellent contrast to the blue. On the front side, flanked by chrome colored strips, the Bugatti logo finishes off the entire front. The Coolermaster logo was removed from sight for this, but anyone who sees the case will recognize it anyway so no harm was done there.

You all know by now that I find a minus in any Mod, and this Bugatti is no exception. The only similarity I can personally see between the Bugatti Chiron and this Mod is the color scheme, and even then only if you look for blue Bugatti’s specifically. I for one am actually missing that amazing rounded curve which runs over the doors on the Bugatti Chiron. So why this name and logo was chosen for this Mod, I’m not really sure, but seeing as inspiration and execution can come in many forms, I think I’ll call this Artists freedom. But for this reason, I did not add this Mod to the “based on a car” series you can find on this site.

[:nl]De meeste computers die je op deze website voorbij ziet komen, zijn gemaakt door al zeer bekende namen in de Modders wereld. Dit zijn meestal de computers die voorbij komen scrollen als ik aan het zoeken ben naar een build om over te schrijven. Soms echter komt er ook een build voorbij die van een voor mij nagenoeg onbekende Modder is, zo ook deze Define Dark die gemaakt is door Ruben van Leusden.

Deze Define Dark kwam ik tegen in de EKWB International fan page groep op Facebook, alle logo’s in deze build zijn dan ook van EKWB. Hoewel als je goed zoekt je ook het MSI logo nog wel kunt vinden. Het mooie aan builds die niet voor een competitie zijn en niet gesponsord worden is altijd dat er geen grote logo’s te zien zijn die door de sponsor nagenoeg verplicht worden. Dat maakt het ook altijd een stukje mooier om naar een build als deze te kijken, een persoonlijke build voor Ruben zelf, dus hij zal er mee moeten leven en er elke dag naar kijken, ik kan me voorstellen dat je dan geen reclame zuil wilt hebben.

Hetgeen me het eerst aantrok in deze build was de strakke loop, geen onnodige bochten, fittingen of andere frutsels, geen onnatuurlijke kleuren vloeistof. Een zeer strakke loop die in zijn eenvoud juist een stille schoonheid laat zien. Naarmate ik verder keek vielen meer en meer dingen mij op in deze build die mij goed bevallen. Het generale kleurschema bijvoorbeeld, diverse tinten grijs en zwart die in perfecte harmonie de chromen loop en gpu backplate op de voorgrond zetten. Het feit dat je niet afgeleid word door felle kleuren van rgb verlichting, zoals bij vele builds nu standaard lijkt, zorgt er juist voor dat deze build zo mooi overkomt.

Gezien de loop geen onnodige lengte in beslag neemt, was er enkel een klein reservoir nodig, dat echter wel een zeer prominente plaats in de case inneemt. Waar normaal in deze Define Fractal S case de drive bays geplaatst zijn, is nu het reservoir gemount.

De loop word echter niet gekoeld door iets vergelijkbaar kleins, maar er is ruimte gemaakt voor een reusachtige 420mm radiator in de bovenzijde van de case. Deze radiator neemt de gehele bovenzijde van voor tot achter in beslag en word gekoeld door een drietal 140mm fans. Hoewel deze radiator zo op papier gigantisch lijkt, zie je er bijna in zijn geheel niets van. Ook dit mooie wegwerken van grote onderdelen is wat mij aantrok in deze Define Dark.

Mochten er nog drives aanwezig zijn, zijn deze ongetwijfeld verplaatst naar achter de motherboard tray, waar in deze case al standaard de SSD mounts geplaatst zijn. De Define Dark heeft tevens een geinstalleerde M.2 met EKWB heatsink, maar voor een persoonlijke build lijkt dat me toch iets te weinig opslag, dus ik vermoed dat er wel meer schijven verstopt zijn. De summiere specs lijst bewijst mijn vermoeden dan ook, naast de 960 Evo M.2 van Samsung, zijn er tevens 2 850 Evo SSD’s van Samsung ergens in deze build geplaatst. De ram modules in deze case hebben wel een beetje weg van corsairs dominator serie, echter vind ik in deze Define Dark het rechte van de gekozen heatsinks toch beter passen. Een totaal van acht modules die de Cpu waterblock flankeren in zeer strakke rechte lijnen zorgt voor een zeer tijdloze ervaring.

Gezien ik altijd mijn mening op schrijf, zijn er altijd minpuntjes te vinden in builds. In deze build zijn er twee kleine dingetjes die ik toch heel graag anders had gezien, maar zoals altijd vallen die dingetjes pas op als je er langdurig naar kijkt of als je er op gewezen word. Wil je dus je onschuldige blik op deze build behouden, lees dan niet verder.

De buis die van de top van het reservoir naar de radiator loopt lijkt iets scheef te lopen, het lijkt me een easy fix door een iets langere fitting of een spacer te plaatsen. Graag had ik ook in de kabels die naar de GPU lopen hetzelfde drie-kleuren schema gezien als in de atx stroom kabels, dit zou de kabels geheel gelijkwaardig maken en ze samen een maken in de case. Doordat er zoveel aandacht aan detail in de rest van de build is gestoken zijn deze twee kleine minpuntjes juist hetgeen dat mij het meest zou gaan storen na verloop van tijd. Maar zoals gezegd, dit is mijn mening, de jouwe hoeft niet hetzelfde te zijn.

These are the computers that scroll by on my feeds most when I’m looking for a build to write about. Sometimes, however, a build comes by which was made by a (to me) relatively unknown Modder. This Define Dark by Ruben van Leusden is one of those builds.

I came across this Define Dark in the EKWB International fan page group on Facebook, all the logo’s in this build are, as expected, EKWB’s. Though if you were to look carefully, you would find the MSI logo in there somewhere too. The beauty of builds that haven’t been made for a sponsor or competition is always the total absence of large logos which the sponsor nearly always wants to see, almost mandatory. This makes looking at a build like this all the more pleasant, a personal build for Ruben himself, so he will have to live with it and look at it daily, so I can imagine not wanting an advertising billboard for a computer.

The thing that drew me to this build at first was the very tight loop, no unnecessary bends, fittings and other whimsical things, no unnatural colored liquids. A very tight and elegant loop, which, in its simplicity shows a quiet exquisiteness. The more I gazed upon this build, the more and more things I noticed that I really like. The overall color scheme, for instance, various shades of grey and black, creating a perfect harmony pushing the chrome of the loop and GPU backplate to the foreground. The fact that you’re not distracted by brightly colored RGB lighting, as seems to be the standard these days, truly makes this build shine so delicately.

Seeing as the loop does not take up any unrequired lengths, a small reservoir was sufficient in this loop, a small reservoir that does, however, take up quite the prominent spot within this Define Dark. The reservoir was mounted in the place where you’d normally find the drive bays in this Define Fractal S.

The loop isn’t kept cool by something similarly small, but room has been made for a massive 420mm radiator in the top of the case. This radiator takes up the entire top of the case from front to back and is being cooled by three 140mm fans. Even though this radiator seems gigantic on paper like this, you hardly see anything of it in the build. This clever handling of large parts is also part of what drew me to this Define Dark.

If there are any other drives still present in this build, they will no doubt have been placed behind the motherboard tray, which in this case, already has mounting plates for various SSD’s. We can all see the installed M.2 with the EKWB heatsink, but for a personal build, that simply seems to limited in storage space to me. The specs list confirms my conjecture, besides the 960 Evo M.2 from Samsung, there are also two 850 Evo SSD’s from Samsung hidden in this case.

The ram modules look quite similar to the Dominator series from Corsair, but in my opinion, these straighter lines from the chosen heatsinks truly fit this Define Dark a lot better. A total of eight modules flank the CPU water block in very tight straight lines giving the whole a timeless appearance.

Seeing as what I write is always my opinion, there are always some negatives to be found in builds. In this build, there are two small things which I, for one, would have loved to have seen differently, but as per usual, these tiny issues only get noticed when you stare long enough or if you’re pointed to them. So, if you would like to keep your innocent gaze upon this masterpiece, do not read on.

The tube running from the top of the reservoir to the radiator seems to be a bit crooked, it looks like an easy fix by using a slightly longer fitting or using a spacer. I’d also love to see the cables running to the GPU in the same three color scheme similar to the atx power cables, to draw all the cables into equality throughout the entire case. Because there is so much attention to detail in this build, it’s small things like these that would disturb me over time. But as I mentioned, this is my opinion, it does not have to be yours.

[:nl]De tijd dat computers kamer vullende machines waren die enkel van 1 tot 10 konden tellen zijn gelukkig ver achter ons. Tegenwoordig word de grootte van een computer vooral bepaald door wat er in en op geplaatst word door de eigenaar. Doordat de Modders veelal met waterkoeling werken zijn de loops met reservoirs en radiatoren vooral verantwoordelijk voor de grootte. Echter dat betekent niet dat de computer erg groot hoeft te worden, zoals Peter Brands ook heeft laten zien met zijn “steigerwood” kan het zelfs zeer klein en compact. Modzero laat met zijn Modzero Juice een soortgelijk systeem zien, al is deze in vergelijk iets opzichtiger en niet water gekoeld.

Nadat Modzero zijn ogen had laten vallen op een geschikte case om zijn “Lanbuddy” te vervangen, kwam hij op gegeven moment langs een BMW garage alwaar hij verliefd werd op de kleuren van de BMW M4 die hij daar zag. Deze kleuren combinatie heeft hij gebruikt om de case er spectaculair uit te laten zien, Estoril Blue met chromen accenten en zwart voor een levendig contrast.

Het grootste probleem met een small formfactor build is uiteraard de grootte van de onderdelen die je gebruikt en of die onderdelen wel zullen passen of niet. Er zijn bij deze Modzero Juice ook tal van aanpassingen en custom onderdelen gebruikt om het allemaal netjes te laten passen en het toch werkend te houden. Een van de meest custom onderdelen die hij heeft gebruikt is de voeding. Voor hem was dit een stiekem kerst cadeautje van zijn partner die achter zijn rug om de juiste voeding heeft geregeld. Ze had hem vervolgens in een verpakking van een Corsair VS450 ofwel een voeding die totaal niet zou gaan passen. Toen hij de doos opende en de perfecte voeding zag wist hij dat hij een vrouwtje voor het leven had.

De Gigabyte GTX1060 ITX OC 6G is op zich al een kleine grafische kaart, maar nog was er simpelweg niet voldoende ruimte om deze te plaatsen, dus was er een beetje werk nodig. Het verwijderen van de standaard fan en cover bleek voldoende ruimte op te leveren zelfs met de smallere slim 120mm Scythe fan erop zonder dat er qua koeling veel gemis zou ontstaan. Na deze wijziging bleek dat er qua geluidsniveaus toch wel degelijk verschil was, dus is de standaard koeler en cover er weer terug op geplaatst op later tijdstip.

Om wat extra ruimte te creëren tussen de voeding en de ram geheugen modules heeft Modzero de heatsinks van de HyperX Fury modules vervangen voor de wat kleiner uitvallende EK Monarch blocks, deze worden normaal gesproken gebruikt voor watercooling maar in dit geval is het puur voor de ruimte besparing.

Gedurende deze build heeft Modzero een aantal verschillende dingen geprobeerd met zijn interne bekabeling, ik ben blij dat hij er mee bezig is gebleven want het eindresultaat is gewoon om verliefd op te worden. een van de pogingen:

Hoewel dit er best gelikt uitziet is het toch een beetje te druk naar mijn mening. Eindresultaat in zwart/wit:

De gehele computer draait op dit moment op een enkele M2 SSD, maar zoals vele gamers onder ons weten, heb je nou eenmaal meer opslag ruimte nodig voor al je games. Dus moest er wat meer opslag ruimte bij geplaatst worden. Na aanvankelijk gekozen te hebben voor een externe oplossing (usb naar sata adapter kabel) sloeg de angst voor het onvermijdelijke kwijt raken, of disconnecten van de SSD’s tijdens een game toe. Modzero koos er dus voor om in plaats van een externe oplossing te gebruiken toch een tweetal SSD’s intern erbij te plaatsen. Dit had hij op een eerder tijdstip niet willen doen, gezien de SSD’s gemount worden direct achter de toch wel dikke grafische kaart dus hitte zou een issue kunnen worden. Nadat hij de SSD’s op de mount plaat geplaatst had werd het weer tijd voor wat meer kabelwerk. Hier gebruikt hij een van de mooiere bekabelings-oplossingen die ik tot nu toe gezien heb.

Gezien de verschillende fabrikanten die hij had benaderd voor een custom glazen zijpaneel allemaal met iets te dure prijskaartjes kwamen heeft Modzero besloten om het originele zijpaneel te modden om toch de benodigde ruimte voor de koeling te krijgen. Door het gebruik van de Noctua CPU fan paste dit paneel niet meer, dus moest er een stukje uitgezaagd worden.

Modzero was begonnen met de gedachte om een kleine display in de case te verwerken, gezien de case hier ook een zeer mooie ruimte voor had zou dit met wat technische skill best te verwezenlijken zijn geweest. Echter, het gebruik van de dikke grafische kaart gooide ook hier roet in het eten. Doordat de kaart zoveel ruimte in beslag nam paste de gekozen display niet meer op die plek, dus moest er een andere oplossing komen. Een grotere display! Met behulp van een van de forum “lurkers” is er een custom mount gefabriceerd die het display keurig boven de CPU koeler laat hangen.

Na er bijna een jaar mee bezig geweest te zijn is dit toch wel een zeer geweldige uitziende machine geworden. Modzero is intussen ook vader geworden dus je kan je voorstellen hoe hectisch het geweest moet zijn om dit project af te maken. Het eindresultaat is een computer die niet veel ruimte in beslag neemt, heel makkelijk mee te nemen is naar bijvoorbeeld Lan-party’s en er simpelweg extreem mooi uitziet.

These days the size of a computer is mostly dependent on what the owner puts in and on it. Because Modders mostly work with water cooling, the loops with reservoirs and radiators are mostly responsible for the build’s size. This, however, does not mean that the computer will automatically become huge, as Peter Brands has already demonstrated with his “steigerwood” it can even be done very small and compact. Modzero shows us a similar type of system, though this one is a bit more flashy and not water cooled.

After Modzero had let his eyes fall on a suitable case to replace his “Lanbuddy”, he eventually came by a BMW Garage, where he fell in love with the colors of the BMW M4 he gazed upon there. He used this color combination to make the case look spectacular, Estoril Blue with chrome accents and black to create a lively contrast combined on one case make for a heck of a sight.

The biggest issue with a small form factor build is, of course, the size of the components you use and whether or not those components will actually fit. In this Modzero Juice, there have been quite some adjustments and custom parts used to fit it all nice and still create a working computer. One of the most uncommon components he has used has to be the power supply. This was actually a sneaky little Christmas gift from his partner, who went behind his back and got the perfect PSU for this project. The manufacturer sent it in different power supply’s box which she gift wrapped. So when Modzero opened the wrapping and saw a Corsair VS450, he thought things had gone a bit wrong. It was when he opened that box that he realized this girl was a real keeper!

The Gigabyte GTX1060 ITX OC 6G is in itself already a small graphics card, but still, there was simply not enough room to place this, so a little bit of work had to be done. Removing the standard fan and shroud seemed to create enough clearance even with the slim 120mm Scythe fan on it, without losing any in cooling performance. After a while this change did have some negative effects on the sound levels, so Modzero put the standard fan and shroud back on at a later time.

To create some extra room between the PSU and Ram memory modules, Modzero replaced the HyperX fury heatsinks for the smaller EK Monarch blocks, which are more commonly used in water cooling but in this case, it’s solely done for the saving of space.

During this build, Modzero has tried various methods for his internal wirings, I, for one, am glad he kept at it, cause the end result simply warms my heart. One of the attempts:

At this time the entire computer runs on a single M2 SSD, but as many gamers among us know, you need a lot of storage for all your games. So there was a need for some more storage devices. After initially choosing for an external sollution (usb to sata adapter cable) the fear of losing a drive, or having a drive disconnect mid-game, became a real eye opener. After this fear Modzero chose to go with an internal method, and decided to mount two SSD’s in the case. Earlier he had forgone this sollution due to the fact that these SSD’s would be mounted directly behind the GPU which generates quite a bit of heat, which in turn could damage the SSD’s. But he accepted the challenge and mounted the SSD’s on the mounting plate. After this it was back to the wiring. At this point, he shows us one of the most elegant wiring solutions I have seen to date.

Modzero contacted various suppliers to get a custom glass side panel made, but the price tag was a little too steep at this time, so he decided on modding the original side panel to get the needed spacings for the cooling. Because he used a Noctua CPU fan the original panel simply did not fit anymore, so parts had to be cut out.

At the start Modzero had thought about placing a small display in the case, seeing as the case has a very nice spacing for this, it would have taken a bit of technical skill to actually get this done. However, the use of the somewhat thick graphics card again messed with the planning. Because the card took more space than anticipated, the chosen display did not fit that spot, so a different approach had to be taken. This came in the form of an even bigger display! With the help of one of the forum “Lurkers” a custom mount was fabricated which floats the display nicely above the CPU cooler.

After having worked on this project for nearly a year, this has become one awesome looking machine. Modzero has become a Dad in the meantime as well, so you can imagine how hectic it has been to finish this project. The end result is a computer which does not take up a lot of space, is very easy to bring along to for instance Lan-Party’s and simply looks extremely beautiful.

[:nl]Voor ik helemaal diep inga op de MK750, even een klein beetje recente geschiedenis over deze website en mijzelf. Zoals veel van de huidige volgers wel zullen weten ben ik lange tijd stil geweest, er kwamen maar weinig artikelen uit en ik had ook maar weinig zin om te schrijven. Dat is de laatste tijd een stuk veranderd. Sinds kort ben ik overgeschakeld naar de MK750, met dit toetsenbord is een groot deel van mijn zin weer terug gekomen. De reden hiertoe lees je in deze review.

Voor ik deze MK750 van Coolermaster in mijn bezit kreeg had ik een Mechanisch toetsenbord met “Blue switches”. Dat toetsenbord hamerde lekker en tijdens games was die dan ook geweldig. De gevoeligheid van de toetsen tegenover de zware aanslagen was gewoonweg ideaal te noemen. Echter na verloop van tijd werd ik mij steeds bewuster van het zeer luide getik van de toetsen en als je dan langere teksten tikt kan dat zeer irritant worden. De MK750 heeft de zogeheten “Brown switches” deze hebben een iets minder luide tik, tenzij je ze echt tegen de bodem aanramt. Doordat de MK750 een stuk minder gehorig is bleef ik met dit toetsenbord ook wat later doorgaan met typen zonder me zorgen te hoeven maken over hoeveel lawaai ik maakte, ik woon namelijk niet alleen en heb de neiging vooral ‘savonds de schrijven.

Een ander groot voordeel tegenover het vorige toetsenbord dat ik had is de geweldige wristrest. Mijn vorige toetsenbord miste dit geweldige stukje techniek, waar het toetsenbord dat ik daarvoor had het wel had. Dit zorgde voor wat extra stress op mijn polsen en handen waardoor ook de zin mij regelmatig verliet. De wristrest die bij de MK750 zit heeft zijn nadelen, maar de voordelen zijn toch wel veruit in de meerderheid. Mijn handen hebben nu een stuk relaxtere positie in vergelijk, hierdoor kan ik dan ook langere periodes doorgaan zonder mijn polsen te moeten masseren wegens krampen. Hoewel de wristrest geweldig is, heeft deze ook wat nadelen. Doordat ik redelijk grote handen heb liggen mijn handen zowiezo al wat lager op het toetsenbord, de wristrest had voor mij iets langer mogen aflopen. Nu zou je kunnen zeggen dat je hem kan verplaatsen wanneer je wilt, maar zodra je dit doet is de rest net iets te hoog waardoor het typen toch weer wat minder fijn gaat. Een ander nadeel is dat wanneer je de wristrest gebruikt, je die geweldig uitziende lightbar op de voorzijde niet meer ziet. Maar als je de wristrest geheel weglaat valt deze MK750 toch net iets hoger uit dan comfortabel is, wat dus weer ten nadele van het typ gemak gaat.

De MK750 heeft een minimalistisch design, de “footprint” van het bord is mooi klein te noemen hoewel er toch alles op zit wat je nodig zult hebben, of je nou gamer bent of schrijver, of enkel films en muziek op je PC afspeelt. Aan de zijden van het toetsenbord heb je geen overbodige ruimte, naast de keys val je dus gewoon recht door naar je bureau. Dit heeft wat gewenning gekost, voorheen legde ik mijn linker pink altijd op dat extra beetje ruimte, en nu merk ik aan mijzelf dat ik het toetsenbord vast grijp met mijn pink en ringvinger om ze af en toe wat te laten rusten. Verder zitten op de MK750 alleen de hoognodige toetsen, maar ook een viertal dedicated multimedia keys, een Mute knop, een play/pause knop, een skip back en skip vooruit toets. Deze toetsen zijn reuze handig als je veel films etc kijkt, maar voor de rest zal je ze weinig gebruiken. Wellicht is dit ook de reden waarom de toetsen best lastig bereikbaar zijn. Ze zijn namelijk boven de cijfer pad geplaatst en vallen een heel stuk lager dan de overige toetsen, wat ervoor zorgt dat je over de cijfer pad heen moet reiken. Voor de rest voelt het bord echt geweldig stevig aan, de alluminium behuizing zorgt voor een redelijk gewicht waardoor het bord netjes op je bureau blijft liggen. De voetjes kunnen opgeklapt worden om het bord iets meer naar je toe te laten leunen, wat in mijn geval geen overbodige luxe is gebleken. Tevens een leuke feature is de kabelgoot die in de bodem is gemaakt, hier kan je de kabel van het toetsenbord naar een van de zijdes laten afwijken zodat je niet speciaal een kabel vanuit het midden van het bord weg hoeft te leiden. Die kabel is ook nog eens modulair dus kun je hem verwijderen wanneer je wilt. (handig voor als je hem wel eens meeneemt naar een lan party ofzo)

De RGB van de MK750 is aan te passen vanaf het bord zelf, maar ook via een klein programmatje dat te downloaden is vanaf de Coolermaster website. Hoewel ik deze software aanvankelijk niet werkend kreeg op mijn Windows insiders preview versie, kreeg ik van Jerry Driessen (De Go-To man bij Coolermaster Nederland) als heel snel een wel werkende versie van de software en is mijn feedback intern ook direct doorgegeven. De software is zeer gebruiksvriendelijk en werkt een heel stuk makkelijker dan het programmeren via het toetsenbord zelf. In plaats van te hoeven zoeken naar welke toets wat doet en hoe je dan moet opslaan enzo, kun je in het programma gewoon klikken wat je wilt en instellen zoals jij het wilt hebben. Ik heb aardig wat gespeeld met de verschillende instellingen maar heb uiteindelijk de MK750 op static rood gezet. De overige disco achtige settings gebruik ik wel als ik mijn gear wil showen aan visite, maar voor mijzelf alleen is het enkel afleiding van mijn scherm. Normaal gebruik ik de “Breathing” setting, maar bij de MK750 heeft deze setting 1 enorme teleurstelling. Zodra het licht namelijk helemaal dempt, dan gaat op gegeven moment de verlichting geheel uit, om vervolgens weer langzaam lichter te worden. Dit zorgt echter voor een best irritant klein flitsje wat zeer afleidend kan werken.

Terugkomend op de toetsen. Het gevoel dat je van de toetsen krijgt is, als je erover nadenkt, best lastig te omschrijven. Je drukt de toets in en de eerste paar milimeter heb je geen weerstand, om vervolgens een beetje weerstand te voelen, om hierna de bodem van je bord te raken. Zoals ik al zei het geluid is minder dan van de blue switches, en hierdoor typ ikzelf een stuk lekkerder, maar dit is voor iedereen anders, en dat hebben ze bij Coolermaster ook geweten, vandaar dat de MK750 in verschillende switch types zal verschijnen.

Mijn conclusie:

De Coolermaster MK750 is een geweldig toetsenbord met een heleboel leuke voordelen voor elke soort gebruiker, er zijn nog wel wat dingetjes die in volgende versies wellicht bekeken kunnen worden, maar al met al, een zeer lekkere ramplank.

Zoals je hebt kunnen lezen in deze review, ga ik niet in op de technische dingen, er zijn genoeg reviews die dat doen. Voor dit artikel heb ik gekozen om mijn ervaringen met het bord te omschrijven in plaats van een generieke verzameling van jargon en details neer te gooien. Ervaring zijn namelijk voor iedereen anders, en het beste advies dat ik je kan geven bij het kopen van een toetsenbord is als volgt: Ga naar een winkel, en typ op het toetsenbord dat je wilt gaan aanschaffen om zeker te zijn dat dat bord ook echt bij jou past.[:en]Before I go in on the actual MK750, I will start off with a bit of recent history about myself and this website. As many of the current followers will have already known, I have been quiet for quite some time, very few articles came by my hand and the feel for writing had left me. This has changed quite a bit. Since I switched to the MK750, my mood for writing has returned for a large portion. The reason for this change and what this keyboard has to do with it can be read in this review.

Before I got this MK750, made by Coolermaster, in my possession, I had a mechanic keyboard with “Blue switches”. That keyboard pounded away nicely and my fingers were like hammers on it in games, which felt pretty good. The sensitivity combined with the heavy keystrokes made it nearly ideal. After a time, however, I became more and more aware of the very loud clacks of the keys, and when you write longer pieces of text those clacks can become quite annoying. The MK750 has the so-called “Brown switches” these hold a slightly lesser audible clack unless you bottom them out by ramming them into the keyboard. Because the MK750 is a lot less loud, I tend to keep going a while later than before without me having to worry about how much noise I was actually making, seeing I do not live alone and I really love writing late at night.

  Another huge advantage compared to the previous keyboard I had, is the amazing wrist rest. My previous keyboard did not have this marvelous piece of technology, whereas the one I had before that did have it. This caused quite a bit of extra stress on my wrists and hands, which also heavily impaired my feel for typing. The wrist rest which comes with the MK750 has some disadvantages, but the advantages outweigh these easily. My hands now have a much more relaxed position by comparison, and this makes it a lot more comfortable to keep going for long ends at a time without the need to massage my wrists cause of cramps. Even though this wrist rest is amazing, it does have some negative points in my opinion. Because my hands are quite huge, I rest my hands lower on the keyboard at all times, this so I do not have to curve my fingers fully to press the letters. The wrist rest would have been more comfortable if it slanted off a bit longer, so my actual wrists would rest on it instead of the bottom of my palms. The wrist rest is easily detachable (magnets) so you could move it further away from the keyboard to achieve this, but when you do this the rest itself just feels too high which causes the actual typing to be less pleasant. Another disadvantage of this wrist rest is that when you use it, you cannot see the great looking lightbar on the front of the keyboard anymore. But leaving the wrist rest off entirely, this MK750 simply is too high to be comfortable, so I sacrificed the lightbar for my ease of typing.

The MK750 sports a minimalistic design, the “footprint” of the board can be called nice and small, even though everything you might need is on it, whether you are a gamer or a writer, or just use your pc for watching movies and listening to music. On the sides of the keyboard there is no useless space, so next to the keys you fall straight through to your desk surface. This has cost me some getting used to, in the past, I rested my left pinky finger on that bit of extra space, and now I notice myself grabbing the keyboard with my pinky and ring finger when I need to rest them between strokes. You will only find the most basic keys on this MK750, but also a total of 4 dedicated multimedia keys, a Mute button, a play/pause button, a skip back and a skip forward button. These keys come in very handy when you watch a lot of movies etc, but for the rest of the time, you will hardly ever use them. The less frequent use of these buttons might also be the reason as to why they are quite daunting to reach. They have been placed above the numpad and are a lot smaller and lower than the other keys, so if you want to use them you will have to reach over the numpad. Even though it has a minimal design, it really does feel quite sturdy, the aluminium housing makes this board quite hefty which keeps it nicely in place on your desk. The feet can be used to raise the board slightly, which has proven to be a nice feature in my case seeing it really does help with the overall comfort. Another nice feature is the built-in cable management solution which has been carved in the bottom of the board, this allows you to guide the cable to either side of the board, making it disappear from the middle of your desk. That actual cable also happened to be modular so you can remove it whenever you want (comes in very handy if you wish to bring your board to a Lan party or something)

  The MK750 holds a large array of RGB features, like lighting up each key in any color you might want, various pre-set lighting schemes, but also lightbars on the sides and front can be adapted to your color moods and wishes. These lighting options can be changed from the board itself, but I found that to be quite a hassle, seeing I threw out the manual first and asked questions later. So I resorted to the software of the board to make the adjustments. Sadly at first, I was unable to use the software, which fell prey to various errors on my windows insider preview builds. However, a short message on Facebook quickly resulted in Jerry Driessen (the go-to guy for Coolermaster Netherlands) sending me a version of the software that did work, as well as my feedback being addressed internally by Coolermaster. Thank you again, Jerry! The software is quite user-friendly and works a lot easier than programming the keyboard using its keys. Instead of having to find which key does what and how to save everything etc, you can actually just click on the program on what you want to achieve and set it up the way you want it to be. I have been toying with the various settings quite a bit but ended up setting the MK750 to a static red. The other disco like lighting effects I will use when I’m showing off my gear, but for myself, it’s just a distraction from the screen. Normally I would use the “Breathing” setting, but this setting has a large flaw in this MK750. As soon as the light dims all the way, at a certain point, the lights go off entirely for a short amount of time, after which it’ll come back on to slowly go to the brightest setting. This causes an annoying little flash which really is quite distracting in a bad way.

Coming back to the keys. The feeling these keys give you can be, if you think about it, quite hard to describe. You press the key and the first few millimeters you will have no resistance, to come to a point where you feel a bit of pushback, after which you bottom out the key. As I mentioned the sound is less audible than that of the blue switches and this causes me to type with a lot more comfort, but this is different for each and everyone, they knew this at Coolermaster, hence the fact that the MK750 will come in a variety of switch types.

My conclusion:

The Coolermaster MK750 is a truly magnificent board with a lot of fun features and advantages for any type of user, there are, however, a few things that should be looked after in next versions, but all in all, an amazing keyboard.

As you could have read in this review, I do not go into the technical stuff, there are plenty reviews to find that give you that information. For this article, I chose to describe my experience with the board instead of creating a generic collection of hard to read technical talk and details. Experiences are different for everyone, and the best advice I can give you if you consider buying this keyboard is this: Go out to a shop, type a bit on the board and see if it truly fits your needs. This MK750 fits mine perfectly.

One last note: I bought this keyboard with because I wanted to have it, this has been in no way sponsored by Coolermaster or anyone else. If this review seems overwhelmingly positive about the board, it’s because to me it is, this board suits all my needs and I have been playing around with it in quite a few games as well as writing with it. I can’t say I got any better at gaming or writing (I still suck) but the board does make the ride a lot more comfortable.

[:nl]Met de recente opleving van nieuwe Coolermaster Cosmos Cases en dan doel ik vooral op de geweldige C700P, vond ik het leuk om even terug te kijken op een aantal oudere Cosmos Case Mods. De iconische Case van Coolermaster heeft vele jaren gezorgd voor enkele zeer geweldige Mods en er zijn maar weinig Modders die er niet mee hebben gewerkt. In dit artikel wil ik er een aantal laten zien die mij vooral zijn bijgebleven terwijl ik heb terug gekeken. Dit artikel gaat over Cosmos CaseMods.

In tegenstelling tot normaal begin ik dit artikel met een kleine gallery van diverse foto’s om je een impressie te geven van de kunststukken die gemaakt zijn met de cosmos als basis. Na deze kleine gallery zal het artikel verder gaan.

Dat zijn een paar zeer mooie Cosmos Casemods nietwaar? Met de verbeteringen die aan de Cosmos zijn aangebracht kan ik haast niet wachten om te zien wat voor Mods er allemaal nog aan staan te komen gebaseerd op de C700P.. eigenlijk hoop ik dat sommige Modders speciaal terugkomen naar de Modding wereld om hun eigen Iconische Mods nogmaals te maken, maar nu met de vernieuwde Cosmos.. Vooral de Aston Martin Mod gemaakt door Derek Smith zou ik wel eens nieuw leven ingeblazen zien worden..

De Cosmos met de zeer herkenbare handvatten op de bovenzijde roept bij vele Modders een gevoel van nostalgie op, een gevoel dat alleen een case kan oproepen waar ze met verlangen naar terugdenken. Dit gevoel heeft er wellicht ook voor gezorgd dat de Cosmos zo lange tijd zeer gewild is gebleven, en wellicht ook een directe reden om hem meermaals opnieuw te trachten uit te brengen in een nieuw jasje.

Het valt niet te ontkennen dat de Cosmos zijn stempel op de Modders wereld heeft achter gelaten, het is zonder twijfel figuurlijk en letterlijk een zwaargewicht in de Case wereld. En hoe kan ik dit artikel beter afsluiten dan door een Cosmos CaseMod uit te lichten gemaakt door een zwaargewicht in de Modders Wereld, de persoon van wie ik al eerder de Skyline GT-R Cosmos mod heb mogen beschrijven, Ronnie Hara!

Steel Dragon:

De Steel Dragon is een Cosmos SE CaseMod om exact te zijn, en lijkt een geheel eerbetoon te zijn aan MSI en Coolermaster gecombineerd. De dieprode kleur gecombineerd met het metalen zilver op het duistere zwart zorgt voor een zeer strakke vertoning aan de buitenzijde alsmede aan de binnenzijde. De grote MSI draak die de zijde van de Case domineert is in geweldig detail afgebeeld en maakt echt deel uit van de Case opzich. In veel CaseMods zie je helaas dat elementen er los op gesmeten worden om maar bij een bepaald thema te passen, maar in deze Steel Dragon lijkt alles op zijn plaats, geen enkel deel is overbodig.

Zodra de zijde opengaat word je begroet door een nog grotere draak die de binnenzijde lijkt te beschermen, en deze is het beschermen meer dan waard. een custom loop uitgevoerd in doorzichtige buizen tussen de zilveren elementen met hierdoorheen vloeiend bloedrode vloeistof. De case lijkt wat vol, maar het is geen onplezierige drukte, de strakke lijnen maken het geheel zelfs een waar genot om naar te kijken. De plaatsing van het reservoir in de achterzijde van de Case is iets dat niet vaak gedaan word, wegens dat gevoel van drukte dat je dan krijgt in de Case en omdat je daar gewoon veelal niet voldoende ruimte hebt om mee te beginnen. Toch is het Ronnie Hara in deze build zeer goed gelukt, het reservoir lijkt daar zelfs gewoon te horen. Zwevend boven de 2 grafische kaarten, strak tegen de achterzijde van de Case aan. Vanwege de enorme cover waarop de draak is uitgebeeld is alle loze ruimte direct verstopt en eventuele bekabeling geminimaliseerd. Ook dit werkt mee met de enorme strakke look van de Case en past perfect in het algehele thema van de Steel Dragon.

De 3 fans op de voorzijde van de Cosmos SE geven de Case een industriele doch futuristische look die zelfs tegenwoordig in veel Mods niet zou misstaan. De bovenzijde is ook afgedekt met een MSI draak, hoewel ikzelf die draak net iets teveel van het goed vind. De beide draken in de zijde vind ik persoonlijk al voldoende, en wellicht had er op de dicht zijde ook nog een draak gemogen maar de bovenzijde had van mij ook gewoon alleen mesh mogen zijn.

With the enhancements that have been put into the Cosmos I can hardly wait to see what types of Mods will emerge using the C700P as their base.. Also I’m kind of hoping some Modders will make a special (temporary) comeback to the Modding World to revisit their own iconic Mods and rebuild those again, this time using the renewed Cosmos.. Especially the Aston Martin Mod made by Derek Smith would be a Mod I’d love to see with a new breath of life..

The Cosmos with it’s very recognizable handles on the topside creates a feeling of nostalgia in a lot of Modders, a feeling that only a Case which is being looked back upon with a passion can create. This feeling could quite possibly be the reason why the Cosmos has been so popular troughout the years, and most likely a direct influence on it’s recent renewals in quite a few special editions.

It is without a doubt that the Cosmos has left its mark on the Modding World, and it cannot be denied that its a figurative and litteral heavy weight in the Case World. And what better way could I possibly close this article off than by highlighting a Cosmos CaseMod which has been made by a Heavy weight in the Modding World, a person of which I previously had the honor of writing about using his Skyline GT-R Cosmos Mod, Ronnie Hara!

  Steel Dragon:

The Steel Dragon is a Cosmos SE CaseMod to be exact, and seems to be a full tribute to MSI and Coolermaster combined. The deep red color combined with the metallic silver on the black generates a very tight looking appearance on the outside as well as on the inside. The large MSI dragon that prances on the side has been made in magnificent detail and truly is part of the Case itself. In lots of CaseMods you often find elements plastered on the Case to try and fit a certain theme, but in this Steel Dragon everything seems to belong in that exact same spot, not a single piece is out of place.

As soon as the side opens up you’re greeted by an even bigger dragon which seems to be protecting the innards, and these innards are worth protecting. A custom loop presented in clear hardline tubing between silver fittings and elements with a bloodred liquid flowing inside them. The case may seem a bit cramped, but it’s not an unpleasant crowdedness, the tight slick lines actually make it a pleasure to look at. The placing of the reservoir in the backside of the Case is something that even now isn’t done very often, because of the fullness it generates in a Case, and simply cause most times there simply isn’t room for it in that position. Still Ronnie Hara made it work excellently in this Build, the reservoir even seems asif it belongs in that exact location. Floating above the 2 graphics cards, snug against the backside of the Case. Because of the enormous cover which presents the dragon, all the empty useless space has been covered up while also hiding all the wiring and such out of sight, minimalising the visible cables. This works perfectly for creating that tight clean look and feel and fits the general theme of the Steel Dragon in an amazing way.

The three fans on the front side of the Cosmos SE give the Case a somewhat industrial and yet futuristic look which wouldn’t seem out of place in a lot of Mods being built these days. The top has also been covered with an MSI dragon, though I think this is a bit overkill. The both dragons on the side are enough for me, and perhaps a dragon on the other closed side would’ve been possible, but the top would have been fine with just mesh in my opinion.

Final Thoughts:

There are loads of Cosmos Mods to be found out there, and I expect there’ll be loads more within a very short period of time. I for one would love to see more of these amazing Mods, so did you create one, have you seen one, or do you know someone that made one, do not hesitate, comment below.

[:nl]In een tijdperk waarin veel mensen het toevoegen van RGB verlichting al als een volledige Mod op zich zien, is het voor mijn oogjes een genot om weer eens een Mod te zien waarbij juist de strakke look tevoorschijn komt. Geen regenbogen van licht, geen superfel gekleurde watercoolings loops, maar gewoon een zeer mooie geweldige kast die je graag op je bureau ziet staan. Dit artikel gaat over IKONiK gemaakt door Envious Mods.

Het kiezen van een naam voor je CaseMod is een lastige keuze, de naam behoort je Mod perfect te omschrijven en toegevoegde waarde aan de Mod te geven. Zodra je dan je Mod een naam geeft als IKONiK, dan moet de Mod toch wel aan bepaalde kwaliteit voldoen. Gelukkig is Envious Mods een van de Modders aan wie ik zo’n naam wel zou toevertrouwen. De Mod op zich ziet er een beetje gewoontjes uit op eerste zicht, maar naarmate je er meer naar kijkt en de diverse dingen bekijkt die erin en op zitten, zie je al snel waarom deze naam zo mooi past bij deze Mod.

Zwart en Chroom zal waarschijnlijk altijd een van mijn meest favoriete kleurencombinaties blijven, deze combinatie straalt naar mijn mening de meeste klassieke waardigheid uit, zonder dat het overweldigende gevoel van brute kracht verloren gaat. Het gebruik van diverse zwart tinten met witte afwerking zorgt ervoor dat geen enkel stukje van deze Mod saai word zonder het onderlinge verband te verliezen. De balans tussen het Zwart en het Chroom zorgt er tevens voor dat je aandacht word getrokken naar bepaalde delen zonder dat het afleidend is.

De IKONiK heeft als basis case de alom bekende Dark Base 900 Pro van BeQuiet, Envious Mods had geen betere keuze kunnen maken naar mijn mening. De Dark Base geeft de Modder naast alle modulaire veelzijdigheid, ook nog eens een zeer geweldige ruimte om in te bouwen. Dit en het feit dat de BeQuiet Dark productlijn zich gewoon uitstekend leent voor een thema als deze zorgt ervoor dat ik Envious Mods en BeQuiet applaudeer voor deze geweldige samenwerking.  Hoewel er naar mijn mening niet heel veel veranderd hoeft te worden om de BeQuiet producten in deze build te verwerken, zijn er toch aardig wat dingen gebeurd. De voeding is weggestopt achter een PSU shroud waardoor het grootste deel van de voeding niet te zien is. In deze shroud is echter wel een klein venstertje open gelaten waardoor de naam van de voeding nog geheel in zicht blijft. Dit zal ongetwijfeld gedaan zijn om de sponsoren tevreden te houden, maar ik vind het nog gewoon zeer netjes gedaan en wel degelijk een meerwaarde in deze Mod hebben. Het breekt de PSU shroud namelijk zeer netjes op zodat het niet zoals bij veel builds een enkel vlak blijft. Overigens moet ik hier Envious Mods een zeer groot compliment geven, het is best lastig om je sponsoren tevreden te houden door hun merknamen te verwerken in een Mod. Veel Modders plaatsen de namen op een groot vlak en werken ze weg in de Mod zelf. Envious Mods kiest er veelal voor om de namen juist in de Mod te houden, dit heeft meerdere voordelen. De sponsors merknamen zijn zichtbaar op hun producten die in de Mod verwerkt zijn. Het geheel van de CaseMod blijft intact, er zijn geen storende factoren zoals een reclame zuil bijvoorbeeld. En wellicht het grootste voordeel, op deze manier lijkt de Mod op een computer die je graag op je bureau hebt staan, zelfs al ben je geen fan van een bepaald merk dat erin zit. Zeer netjes Envious Mods, Zeer netjes.

IKONiK is het soort Mod waarvan het thema valt in de klassieke stijlen, elegant, minimalistisch en toch met een moderne look en feel. Het zal me dan ook niet verbazen dat deze Mod door velen bestempeld zal worden als geweldig. Echter zijn de individuele delen van de Mod juist niet elegant, minimaal of modern.. De custom loop is een robuuste verzameling van chromen buizen die de hele Case doorkruisen, de dichte zijde lijkt op een industriele computer die het juist moet hebben van stevigheid, en de hardware in de case lijkt geselecteerd te zijn op het blokkerige uiterlijk. Het is juist de schoonheid in deze Mod dat alle ruwe delen samen zo’n genot voor het oog zijn geworden. Alle individuele delen in deze IKONiK vormen samen een waar neo-klassiek schouwspel waar ik mijn ogen lange tijd niet vanaf heb kunnen houden.

De case is opgebouwd in een “inverted” manier waardoor je de case inkijkt vanaf de rechter zijde, in plaats van zoals normaal vanaf links. Dit heeft als mooie gevolg dat onder andere de EVGA Powerlink nu correct lijkt te liggen doordat de naam niet op zijn kop staat. Deze Powerlink is overigens een leuk hulpje om de case in zijn geheel strak te houden door de kabels naar de grafische kaart uit het zicht te houden.

Een poos terug heb ik al eens een artikel geschreven over een CaseMod van Envious Mods, namelijk “Dark Matter“. Het op dat artikel volgende jaar heb ik Envious Mods gevolgd om te zien of mijn voorspelling in dat artikel uit zou komen. Wellicht is hij dat jaar niet eerste geworden in die competitie, maar Envious Mods is wel zeker gegroeid. Dit is zeer duidelijk te zien in zijn Mods, en de manier waarop hij zich vestigd in de Modders wereld. Ik kan haast niet wachten op wat hij nu weer zal bouwen..

   [:en]In an age in which a lot of people see adding RGB lighting to a case as creating a full Mod in itself, it does great pleasure to my eyes to finally see a Mod again in which the tight clean look has the upper hand. No rainbows of light, no super bright colored water cooling loops, but just a very awesome looking case which you’d love to see standing on your desk. This article is about IKONiK made by Envious Mods.

Choosing a name for your CaseMod is a difficult choice, the name has to perfectly describe your Mod and have added value to the Mod at the same time. So, when you give your Mod a name such as IKONiK, you better make sure that Mod holds certain qualities. Thankfully Envious Mods is one of those Modders tho whom I can give absolute trust in using such a name.The Mod in itself looks a bit bland at first, but the longer you look at it the more various things that are in and on it start popping out at you, and the more you will understand why such a name is fitting to this Mod.

Black and Chrome will probably always be one of my most favorite color combinations, this combination simply screams classical dignity without losing the overwhelming sense of brute force. The use of black shades with white rims makes it so not a single part of the Mod gets dulled down, without actually taking that piece out of the overall balance within the totality of the Mod. The balance between black, chrome, and white, also ensures that your attention gets drawn to certain areas without being distracting.

As a base IKONiK has the well known Dark Base 900 Pro made by BeQuiet, in my opinion, Envious Mods could not have made a better choice for this theme. Besides giving the Modder a lot of modular versatility, The Dark Base gives the Modder an amazing amount of space to build in. This and the fact that the BeQuiet product line simply lends itself perfectly to a theme such as this, makes me applaud Envious Mods and BeQuiet for this awesome coalition. Even if I do not think a lot has to be changed to implement the BeQuiet products into this build, quite a few things actually were done. The power supply has been hidden away behind a shroud, keeping most of it out of sight. In this shroud, a small window has been kept open through which the name of the PSU is kept in full view. This will undoubtedly been done to appease the sponsors, but I think it’s a very graceful approach which holds a value in and of itself aswell. It breaks up the shroud, turning a usually dull plate into an eyecatcher giving this part of the build some vigor. Envious Mods has really earned my compliments in this regard, it can be quite a strain to keep your sponsors happy and meanwhile trying to make the best out of your Mods. Most Modders choose to stick the names of the sponsors on plates which can at times become degrading to the build, others put the names on the side keeping them in full view at all times. Envious Mods usually chooses to keep the names on the products in the Mod, which actually holds multiple advantages. The sponsor’s names are seen on the products which have been used in this Mod, the whole of the CaseMod stays intact and true to it’s nature without the need to create distracting parts like advertisement columns inside or on the Case.  And perhaps the biggest advantage of all, this way the Mod really looks like a computer you’d love to have on your desk, even if you might not be a fan of a certain brand which has gone into it. Very Nicely done Envious Mods, very nice indeed.

IKONiK is the type of Mod of which the theme falls in with the classic styles, elegant, minimalistic and yet a modern look and feel. It will not be surprising to find this Mod loved by many. However, the individual parts of this Mod are anything but elegant, minimal or modern.. The custom loop is a robust collection of chrome tubing criss crossing the entire Case, the closed side resembles an industrial computer which sports sturdiness, and the Hardware in the Case seems to have been selected purely on their block like appearance. The beauty in this Mod comes from all those rough parts coming together as a whole. All the separate pieces in this IKONiK form a true neo classical CaseMod which kept my eyes glued to it for quite some time.

This CaseMod has been built up in the “inverted” style, making you view the hardware from the right side, as opposed from normally the left side. This has a very nice effect of having things the right way in the case, like for instance the EVGA Powerlink which seems to be in a perfect position and not have its name upside down. This Powerlink actually is a nice little helper which helps give the CaseMod it’s tight and clean look by keeping the cables which run to the Graphics card out of sight.

A while ago I wrote an article about another Mod by Envious Mods, namely “Dark Matter“. After that article I’ve kept my eyes on Envious Mods to see if my prediction in that article would come to fruition. He may not have become champion in that competition, but Envious Mods has grown exponentially without a shadow of a doubt. This can be clearly seen in his Mods, but also in the way he’s presenting himself in the Modders World. I can hardly wait what he’ll build next..
