Today, the first Sunday after Pentecost, is the Synaxis of All Saints. Originally, today was meant to commemorate all martyred saints, known and unknown, but in the 9th Century, Byzantine Emperor Leo VI the Wise, in order to honour his pious wife the Holy Empress Theophano, he built a church intending to dedicate it to her while she was still alive. She forbade him to do so, and he decreed that the Sunday after Pentecost be changed to include all saints, martyrs, apostles, hierarchs, prophets and all righteous people who ever lived. He did this knowing that when this day would be celebrated, his Empress' memory would be commemorated along with all the saints in heaven.
