A splendid, small and isolated village, largely accessible only on foot, Montechiaro d'Acqui is a jewel in the Alto Monferrato area that clings to a high hill at 560 metres above sea level. At that height, I could enjoy a gorgeous panorama ranging from the Ligurian Apennines to the Langhe and the Po Valley. Take a look yourself just by tapping on my 'Panorama' highlight on my Instagram page! It was a mammoth task for me to hike up from Montechiaro-Denice station to the ancient village. However, from my vast experience of visiting 'borghi storici' ('historical hamlets and villages') all around mainland Italy, my instinctive feeling was that Montechiaro d'Acqui would be a quiet, timeless gem with marvellous medieval architecture. And so it was with its stone-paved streets, ancient archivolts, houses with moulded architraves and late medieval tombstones. On top of that, ruins of the mighty castle that was destroyed by the Spaniards in the 17th Century remain evident at the very top of the village. You can climb up to them via wooden steps (they are secure!) where you will be treated to a full 360° panorama of the mountainous and hilly area. If it's a bright and sunny day like it was for me, look out for the historical village of Denice on the other side of the valley and, some way above that, the tower of Vengore — and beyond that the tower of Roccaverano which is another must-see village!
