I really am a sucker for (CQL!Verse) plots where Meng Yao stays in the Cloud Recesses. It makes sense for Nie Mingjue to allow and even want his second-in-command to get a proper education he didn’t have a chance to get before. As Nie sect leader, he has the money and the political weight to send Meng Yao along with Nie Huaisang. Studying in Cloud Recesses gives Meng Yao a chance to act his age and maybe get into some bad situations with the other students. He is Nie Huaisangs' protector and friend, and maybe it can lead to uncomfortable and interesting dynamics when Huaisang tries to integrate Meng Yao into his friend group with Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng. Meng Yao gets to bond with Lan Xichen and maybe steal a few kisses. Maybe he can build a few contacts (perhaps through Nie Huaisang and Lan Xichen) of people who don't just see him as a son of a whore. Maybe he can somehow bond with Jin Zixuan a little (who by all means doesn't seem to hold any bad feelings against his half-brother, especially in CQL). Maybe he can finally have a bit of a normal life

I wish we knew more about Jin Zixuan’s feelings towards Jin Guangyao. Like we know he doesn’t like his parents marriage too much, and the interactions Madame Jin has with Jin Guangyao show she really doesn’t like him, as her husband’s illegitimate child, and with a mother of lower social standing. Like we know that Jin Guangyao and Jin Zixuan didn’t fully refuse to interact, because Jin Guangyao is the one who tells Jin Zixuan about Wei Wuxian during the Jin Zixun situation. Jin Zixuan and Jin Zixun are shown both agreeing and disagreeing on matters, and Jin Zixun is kind of a jackass in general about most things, but class status as well. I’m just super curious, because certain aspects of the Jin household mirror the Jiang household, where you’ve got a very tense marriage where the wife is taking out her anger on her husband’s real or perceived infidelity on the child who, in Wei Wuxian’s case, is the center of that rumor, and in Jin Guangyao’s case, is actually the product of said affair, rather than on the husband, because of family hierarchy placing the father above the mother, and then there’s the child who’s the product of the marriage, which in the case of the Jiangs, that relationship between the two children retains intense focus, whereas in the Jins very little focus at all. It’s interesting too bc we know Jin Zixuan has many many many half siblings, Mo Xuanyu, Qin Su, and Jin Guangyao are just the only named ones (and Jin Zixuan only knows one of them as a sibling).

This is so niche and idk how much crossover there is with cql and hotd fans…

But mysaria in the latest HOTD episode reminded me SO strongly of jiggy in ‘impatient and unkind’, which is based off the headcanon that he was a prostitute in yunping too. It was mostly:

The conversation with the fellow sex worker in which she reminded mysaria that to the upper class, ‘a whore can only ever be a whore’; this is a big insecurity of jiggy’s in the fic that he comes back to a lot

The way mysaria has worked her way up to be at the side of one of the most powerful players in the game, yet her position is still so precarious and her own power so dependent on the whims of her employer/lover (yes pre-sunshot nieyao is absolutely a thing in the fic)

The ‘you will only ever be a whore to them’ reminder echoing through the scene soon after, when rhaenyra comes to mysaria for ‘advice’ (looking for someone to blame) and mysaria has to fall back on sex/seduction to smooth things over and re-establish her position… this is a little different from the pre-sunshot nieyao dynamic in the fic (it’s more like nmj just expects sex to be a regular part of their relationship, and jiggy is too uncertain of his value outside of that to feel that he can ever say no), but the concept of insecurity feeding a vicious cycle of using sex/romantic entanglement to secure one’s place is very similar in both imo

Just to be clear, a) I love both rhaesaria and nieyao, but they’re both unhealthy love affairs based on huge power imbalances and clashing perspectives; and b) I don’t think insecurity and low self esteem are automatically part of being a sex worker, but both cql and HOTD take place in very whorephobic societies with huge class divides.
