73. “We shouldn’t be doing this.” cora/allison

It was 0:34 am when Cora opened her eyes and let out a long sigh. Next to her Allison was lying on her side, head propped up on one arm and her eyes fixed on her girlfriend. They exchanged a tired smile but neither of them moved.

“Watching me isn’t creepy at all.”

Cora whispered the words, a grin appearing on her lips. She wanted to lean over and kiss Allison, pull her on top of herself and feel her soft curves under her fingertips. But it was simply too hot. The humidity of this late August night made it impossible to even fall asleep, so making out wasn’t even something she wanted to think about at the moment.

“If I’m going to lie awake all night I might as well enjoy the view.”

Even in the darkness of the night Cora could see the twinkle in Allison's hazel eyes and the dimples on her cheeks. It made her chest ache with happiness, because some days it still seemed like a miracle that they had found each other and let nothing get between them from that day on. Allison seemed to know exactly what Cora was thinking as she lifted her hand and waited for the other girl to catch it and intertwine their fingers.

For a long moment they were just lying there, holding hands and getting lost in each other's eyes. But eventually Cora couldn’t ignore the heat anymore and the sweat that was building up between their hands and making this romantic gesture rather uncomfortable.

“I can’t do this anymore. Get up. We’re going out.”

Cora didn’t wait for a reaction before she pushed herself off the mattress and reached for a shirt to pull it over her heated skin. A moment later she got up to grab the pair of shorts she had carelessly tossed on the floor earlier that night. Meanwhile Allison had only managed to sit up up draw her perfectly arched eyebrows together as she watched Coras every move.

“Where do you want to go at one in the morning?”

Her voice was sceptical and gave away how exhausted she actually was. No wonder after a day full of training and exercise to prepare them for all eventualities. But Cora didn’t let that stop her. She just tilted her head a little, hair falling in her face as she extended her hand to the girl she loved.

“Just trust me.”

It didn’t take any more to get Allison to move out of bed as well and reach for the thin summer dress that flows so perfectly around her hips. With swift movements she pulls up her hair in a messy bun and makes a knot without using a single hair tie. It always fascinated Cora how effortlessly Allison managed to look like a goddess. But she might be a bit biased on that.

Cora's arm had dropped back to her side as she watched Allison, so now it was on the older girl to reach out for Cora and get her to move. And this time Cora just couldn’t help stealing a kiss as she took hold of Allison's hand.

It took them about fifteen minutes to reach their destination, and Cora had made sure to lead Allison through backyards and shortcuts so she wouldn’t know where exactly she was lead to. Only when they reached a wire mesh fence, that Cora didn’t hesitate to climb, did Allison finally realize what her girlfriend was up to.

“You want to break into the public pool?”

Allisons eyebrows were drawn together as she asked that question, her arms resting on top of the fence. She began biting her lower lip when Cora stepped closer again, with a grin on her face and no hint of a doubt showing.

“We need to cool down, Ally. And since when do you back out of an adventure?”

Cora's voice was teasing and she could see by Allison's deepening frown that it was absolutely working.

“We shouldn’t be doing this.”

But just as Allison muttered those words, she grabbed the post of the fence and pulled herself up, giving Cora just enough time to step back so Allison wouldn’t jump right into her. And once they had made their way across the well maintained lawn and the reflecting surface of the pool was finally in sight all doubt seemed to be forgotten.

Both girls turned their heads to exchange a grin before pulling off their clothes and sprinting towards the water. It wasn’t surprising that Cora hit the water first, creating a big splash that hit Allison just as she made a perfect racing dive.

The temperature of the water made both of them breathless at first but also gave them the relief they needed from the unbearable summer heat. And it didn’t take long for them to take advantage of the cold by slinging their arms around each other and raising the temperatures in a whole other way.
