You know what really bothered me about Kara's attitude towards Kryptonite? Is that it conflicts against Clark's attitude about Kryptonite in the comics. Clark willingly gives Batman Kryptonite knowing that he would use it if Superman ever became a threat to humanity. Clark knows how powerful he is, knows that the only thing preventing mass human extinction is his morality and strong will. He knows that he is the most dangerous potential threat to humanity (not unlike Lex's thinking), and (cont.)
(cont.) the only thing that can stop him is Kryptonite. I would think that Kara’s experience with red kryptonite would have made her realize that as well. For her to completely ignore the one thing that would have STOPPED her had the red kryptonite remained in her system is not only myopic but disingenuous to her comic legacy. The show is probably going to adjust this attitude, but it frustrates me that they allowed it to go this far out of character.
YES, THIS. Thank you! Granted, some might argue that an alternative form of counter-measure (other than Kryptonite) should be in order instead. But as far as we all know, the list of weaknesses that a Kryptonian have is a fairly narrow one. The list includes: magic, the radiation of a red sun, vibratory and psychic attacks. All of which is hard to procure – almost elusive even. In the event of another redK/Bizarro or a Kryptonian gone rogue event, mankind can’t procure the above within a short period of time to counteract the threat. The most convenient form of defence is indubitably Kryptonite. So, really. The call for the complete ban and eradication of Kryptonite from the CW version of SG/SM is just foolish.
The comic book characterisation of Superman/Supergirl is the one that makes the most sense so far, in my opinion, while the CW’s portrayal is just… disappointingly dismal at least. Like they have definitely reduced our beloved heroes into a caricature of themselves, is what I feel.
Yes, I suppose some might then argue that Kara’s reaction against Kryptonite is more of a phobic response. I’m not saying it isn’t. It’s just that, humans have all sorts of phobic responses to different sort of things. Clowns. Spiders. Lightning, in my case. I am deathly afraid of lightning, but you don’t see me go around, lashing out to the heavens demanding the complete cease-fire of those atrocious bolts from hell. Instead I just kind of hole myself up in a bundle of blankets and pray that it’ll just stop. It’s how most of the general population deal with their phobias. They grit their teeth, suck it up and put up with it. Or just avoid it completely without much fuss.
Kara lashing out at Lena like that, be it a phobic response or not, is still uncalled for. Because honestly. How does her alleged phobia to Kryptonite make her any more different to someone who’s phobic to heights for example? She’s no different. And the fact that she thinks she is, that she should remain impervious on this planet, puts her needs above everyone else and implies that yes, she just might have a god complex going on.
tl;dr: the CW portrayal and characterisation of our dearest Kryptonians are seriously the worst.
