with the summer solstice she's ready for her first taste the sweet juice on her tongue she
knows where they grow the back roads the paths along the bay where the soil is rich and deep she
has watched their progress
timing is crucial if she sleeps too late if she wanders casually to the bushes as though there were no race
she'll hear no apologies sung to her just full bird sounds content from the trees

sometimes at night she tries to think of new ways to keep them away
what good is a a row of tin cans or a straw man when the trees explode black
she knows how they come back and back she hears them cry hungry from Valhalla
and she's not ready to go there's corn to grow and horses to feed and crabs to scoop from the bay
sometimes after supper when the dusk hovers for a minute before black she
sees thirteen Valkyries waiting in the oak tree outside her bedroom window
