Pt first, En bottom Há qualquer coisa em castelos que me atrai imenso. Sempre que paro em algum (e já estive em vários) não consigo parar imaginar como seria a vida há 500/700 anos... Almourol Castle is located on a small islet in the middle of the Tagus River in Portugal. The medieval castle was part of a defensive line controlled by the Knights Templar and used as a stronghold during the Portuguese Reconquista. The castle was built on an outcropping of granite in an irregular rectangular plan with two enclosures. Nine tall circular towers reinforce the walls, with the interior enclosure located at a higher elevation. The castle is three-stories with the interior bisected by masonry doorways, linking different parts of the castle. It is unclear when the castle was established, but the Romans conquered the area in the first century B.C.. The castle represents the Knights Templar influence in Portugal as they reconstructed the castle in the architectural design of the time. The castle was eventually abandoned until undergoing renovation in the 19th century. In the 20th century, the castle was used as an official residence of the Portuguese Republic. Almourol Castle is open to the public and is accessed by boat at the Parish of Tancos.
