Man Asks Toddler Why She’s Walking Alone. The Answer Has Him in High Alarm
The odd sight of a two-year-old walking herself to day care was enough to alert an off-duty police officer that something was amiss.
The solution to the mystery, however, was heartbreaking.

As the Guardian reports, the officer was driving with his wife in Burton-upon-Trent, England, when he saw the little girl walking down the street. After stopping and identifying himself, he asked the toddler where she was going. Her reply was worrisome— she told the officer that she was walking to day care because she hadn’t been able to wake her mother.
Fortunately, it was a short walk to the girl’s house. There, he found the girl’s mother, 30-year-old Nicolla Rushton, had died. The death was not considered suspicious.

While it was too late to help the girl’s mother, the officer stayed with the little girl until authorities arrived.
Chief Inspector Steve Maskrey praised the police officer and pointed out that it was the man’s dedication to duty that made the best of a tragic situation. Though he was off-duty, the officer followed his instincts and intercepted the toddler before she got too far from home.
“This is a brilliant piece of work by him that shows that we are never off-duty,” said Chief Inspector Maskrey. “The officer and his wife took the time to look after the little girl and stay with her until emergency services arrived … My thoughts are with the family and friends of the deceased at this difficult time.”
The girl is now in the care of relatives.
