aloy was never meant to be born, and yet she was the key to humanity’s survival. a child without parents, a mystery without a past, she was found as an infant at the foot of the all-mother, a sacred mountain revered by the nora tribe. but the matriarchs saw something unnatural in her existence, a presence they could not explain. cast out and branded an outcast, she was given to rost, an exile himself, who raised her in the wilds beyond the tribe’s borders.

but aloy was not merely a lost child. she was the genetic heir of dr. elisabet sobeck, the brilliant scientist who had once fought to save a dying world. centuries before her birth, the earth stood on the brink of annihilation. the faro plague - rogue war machines, unstoppable and endlessly self-replicating - devoured all life in their path. in humanity’s final hour, sobeck devised project zero dawn: a last desperate effort to wipe out the machines and rebuild life from the ashes. the project succeeded, but it came at the cost of the old world.

from zero dawn’s ashes, gaia, an advanced ai tasked with overseeing earth’s rebirth, sowed the seeds of new life. but when gaia’s dark counterpart, hades, was corrupted and threatened to undo everything, the ai made a final, desperate move: it created a genetic clone of elisabet sobeck, the only one who could access the locked systems of zero dawn and stop the coming catastrophe.

that clone was aloy.

unaware of her true purpose, aloy spent her childhood yearning for acceptance and searching for answers. when she uncovered a relic of the old world ... a focus, granting her knowledge beyond her time. she saw glimpses of the past and the secrets hidden from her. to find the truth, she entered the nora proving, seeking a place among her people. but the trial ended in bloodshed as the eclipse, a fanatical cult serving hades, ambushed the competition, marking her for death.

surviving the attack, aloy followed the echoes of her own past, journeying beyond the sacred lands. she uncovered the ruins of her predecessor’s work, the truth of zero dawn, and her own role in the fate of the world. no longer just a hunter, she became the heir to a broken legacy, the only one who could wield the wisdom of the past to fight for the future.

ask aloy when she was born and she would say five years ago when she woke up in hospital, labeled as ' jane doe ' without a single memory to her name. she is released and returned to a redacted life - a lived in apartment without pictures or mementos, like something had come and sucked the soul from her and left her alone with the bones. there are parts of herself she still doesn't understand. after a year spent fruitlessly searching for answers, aloy adopts the online moniker of 4L0Y and is a white-hat hacker of legend, remaining safely within her own home while trying to search for answers about her former life - is that where the technical expertise comes from ? why does her body ache when it rains ? how is it that she can recall how hot blood can get when it's fresh from the spring ? hidden from her memory is a life that is better left forgotten, one where what she knows ( and better yet, what she can do ) made it so that she was more valuable dead. aloy was cultivated as a clone of elisabet sobeck, a former military contractor who helped the operation develop everything from advanced hydroponics to ai systems with applications in warfare. realizing what she had developed and nearly given away, elisabet sobeck went into hiding for decades. the operation, realizing that the information was too precious to forfeit, created and trained aloy as means to track down and neutralize elisabet - who better to think like a fugitive than the fugitive herself ? upon meeting elisabet and hearing the truth of her own creation, aloy ultimately struggled with the final directive of her mission and lets elisabet escape rather than killing her - the operation, now seeing aloy as nothing but a loose end, shoots her and leaves her for dead.
