Alphabet books are tricky. They're so important to early literacy, and they CAN be wonderful when done right ... but they can also be boring, uninspired and kind of cheesy. Luckily, Wallace Edwards's "Alphabeasts" (2002) is none of those things! Even my admittedly poor photography (this one came off my own shelf) can't hide how gorgeous this book is. And while the text is deceptively simple and concise (making it a potentially quick read for younger kids), the setups of animals in wildly improbable household situations, painted in exquisite detail like Renaissance portraits, make it uniquely intriguing for older kids as well, and a great conversation starter.
