I started playing bass recently like really recently and I know nothing but I wanted to make a playlist. I'm googlin' and I realized I don't really know women bassists consciously, so I'm making a playlist and I thought of you as someone who might have suggestions?

Yes! As I’ve said before, I know less about bass than I do about other stuff, but I can for sure point you in some directions. There are so many women who play bass! 

The obvious ones: Tina Weymouth played bass for The Talking Heads as well as Tom Tom Club (hit literally anybody else up for Talking Heads tips), Kim Gordon played bass on most Sonic Youth records (though I don’t think she played bass in Free Kitten), then there is Kim Deal! I am pretty sure Kim didn’t play bass when she was in the Amps, which is my favorite non-Pixies Kim Deal band. She also didn’t usually play bass for The Breeders but another woman, Josephine Wiggs, played bass on at least their first two albums. Pixies records are the place to look for bass inspo--I will let the commenters chime in with their fave! (Everybody has opinions on Pixies :) ) 

Now, my takes!

Kathy Foster plays bass in the Thermals. The Body, the Blood, the Machine is kind of their album, but Fuckin A is probably more the bass album. I guess I hadn’t thought about it before! (Kathy was also in the All Girl Summer Fun Band, but usually on drums.)

Hole’s Kristen Pfaff (RIP) was one of the greats, but DON’T overlook the noise band Courtney and Eric poached her from--MPLS’s Janitor Joe. (She’s only on the first album, Big Metal Birds, and some earlier singles.)

I think of Melissa Auf der Maur as a bassist’s bassist, for sure. If you’re already listening to Celebrity Skin, try her self-titled Auf der Maur next. (Especially if you have some nu metal impulses.)

If you have nu metal impulses: PAZ_LENCHANTIN#DISCOGRAPHY, White Zombie’s Sean Yseult--for sure pick up at least La Sexorcisto!!, I mean, Kittie has given us like 3-7 women bassists (Trish Doan passed away very recently).

TOADIES’ LISA UMBARGER!! If you are picking up bass, please listen to Rubberneck immediately. She is the MOST iconic and this is the best record 

So, you know, D’arcy. Commenters: what’s your favorite D’arcy Wretzky bass performance? 

I mean, if you like nineties girl bands, most of them had women bassists: L7, Babes in Toyland [Maureen did something problematic and stupid the other year please don’t remind me as I have forgotten], DONNA DRESCH, Shonen Knife... lots and lots. Juliana Hatfield is a bassist and plays bass a lot throughout all of the different projects she has been involved in! I am basically the only nineties bitch who isn’t deep into Juliana though 

Debbie Googe of course plays bass on MBV’s Loveless and I feel like there are probably a lot of shoegaze women bassists out there that I don’t know about? 

Patricia Morrison plays bass on Gun Club’s The Las Vegas Story which is the only Gun Club album I really listen to, but also other albums of theirs I think, and she was a founding member of the Bags

Galaxie 500′s Naomi Yang!! 

There is of course Superchunk’s Laura Ballance, tho I dunno for sure how many albums she is on because this band has too many goddamn albums

Rainier Maria’s Caithlin De Marrais !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 

LOTS of women hardcore bassists than aren’t just Kira, lmao :) 

Gail Ann Dorsey worked really closely with Bowie for a looong time and is the featured bassist on a lot of his later albums, starting with I think Earthling. (”part of the bass track on "Little Wonder" was a recording of bassist Gail Ann Dorsey as she tried to get a sound from her pedalboard while not knowing she was being recorded.”)

Gail Ann Dorsey apparently also played for Gang of Four for a while in the nineties, I didn’t know this. Speaking of: Sara Lee played bass on Songs of the Free and Hard, at least.

This is just very basic stuff but I will add more when I am feeling more lucid :) please just listen to nu-metal adjacent 90s albums
