Mac's rejection from his dad is so fundamental to him that he created a god to fulfill Luther's position in Mac's life even when he's not there. Mac made his god in Luther's image: conditional love, demanding, unforgiving, mostly absent. Mac's worldview was shook when he met those christian gays on the boat because Mac's god is supposed to hate him for being gay just like Luther hates Mac for being gay. Mac wants to earn his father's love and yet he believes in a god who will not love him for who he is the same way Luther doesn't. Mac created a father figure to reject him again.
sometimes i think about little mac praying to god to not make him queer and then i remind myself this is a situation comedy. there is nothing comedic about this situation

I actually relate to Mac a lot because I have had what is quite frankly an astonishing amount of people tell me they (correctly) assumed I was gay as soon as we met
macs mom is like truly up there with some of the funniest screentime in the show, though itll never be the same without lynn marie. bonnie + mrs mac's scenes are some of my favorite from the show. im a lesbian who doesn't usually gaf about applying labels to my comedy show but mrs mac does deserve to be a dyke icon cuz shes fucking funnyyyyy bonnie + mrs mac toxic yuri sure fuck it. btw my name is also charlie hi other charlie. I like your mac thinkpieces a lot though
fair enough lol. i do agree that i like mrs mac as a character and find her funny (same as luther and bonnie who are some of my fav side characters even though i do not like them as people) and i do also love her dynamic with bonnie it is so hilarious and i will so miss it this season without lynn marie, she was such a fantastic actor
honestly i'm not too sure why i was so perplexed about this when i made that post lol, looking back it's like completely standard fandom stuff, i guess i was just shocked to see that a lot of people really liked mrs mac that much, it kinda goes deeper than that with me having an issue with some ppl watering down mrs mac's abuse of mac while blowing luther's out of proportion, not that i'm defending luther, i don't like him, but i see ppl talking abt him being violently physically abusive when i highly doubt that was the case, most likely he was just scary but largely absent from mac's life (i have a more in depth analysis abt this in the works i just haven't have a lot of time recently, but this ask reignited that spark in my head so i might finish it soon lol) whereas mrs mac was mac's main caretaker and while i think the majority of her abuse was also neglect like luther, she canonically physically abused mac, not luther, but people hate luther and mrs mac is a lesbian icon
sorry, i got kinda off track there. i don't have an issue with people headcanoning mrs mac as lesbian for the record, i love headcanons and that one in particular is a pretty cool one, esp with her and bonnie being lovers. i think mrs mac contains multitudes and if people think one of those multitudes is that she's gay that's cool, i like yogurt up my ass and a popsicle stick in my mouth! i just get too protective over mac bcs sometimes i feel like people don't care about him and he is so dear to me

I agree with all of this and like Mrs Mac as a funny character the same way I like Barbara but I do agree people downplay her abuse a lot and I've even seen some people say like "Mac needs to take a hint and leave her alone lol" or to some effect. And people do the same thing with Barbara and ignore her mistreatment of Dee sometimes and that annoys me too. I like Mrs Mac as a character I think she's so funny the way all the parents are but as a person she's truly abusive and honestly in some ways worse than Luther because Luther loved Mac at some point in some way and Mrs Mac never did or tried to it seems like. Also she put out cigarettes on him. And I feel like Macs abuse gets overlooked a lot especially from Mrs Mac. I do like her character but I wish people didn't like water down her abuse or even like sympathize with her over Mac like I've seen at times
