what's a dyson sphere?

It’s a gigantic array of solar panels built around a star that an advanced civilization might use to harvest most or all of the output of that star. Because oil will only get us so far but the sun puts out just so much energy.

There’s enough material in our asteroid belt, for example, to build a giant cage of solar panels at 1AU (the earth’s distance) from our sun. With that much power we could collect helium 3 for fusion, crack matter into antimatter, and build ships to go to local solar systems.
