I really love how in LotR if literally one person had killed Gollum, at any point when he did some awful thing which in any other story (and a great many fandom spaces) would have earned him death a thousand times over, Sauron would have won
Like, contrast this with some stores where fandoms still argue about whether the main character should have killed off this villain or that villain and the failure to do so made them soft or was an expression of unforgivable (and therefore narratively unsatisfying) weakness. But in LotR it's objectively a fact that if Gollum had not been there, Sauron would have got the ring, and he would have won. It's built into the narrative. And you can agree or disagree with whatever moral message that may express, but I still like it as a refutation of the easy morality of a lot of black-and-white thinking about good, evil, narrative and characters in general.
We're so close to the Owl House coming back!!! March 19th!!!!! PLEEEASSEEEE
OH MY GOD I KNOW!!! I AM SO FUCKING EXCITED!!!!! i will literally fucking combust. i wont be the same. im already trembling
Someone: how can you like that character? They’re [insert facts/opinions]
Me: and what of it? They’re fictional, bestie. What they do or say doesn’t mean shit. Plus, they look hot while doing it.
i wanted to say this quick thing...
YOU do not get to determine whether racism is important or not to a character. YOU do not get to tell us we can’t incorporate a very real thing both in OUR lives and in our characters lives.
i know we want rp and the things we write to be picture perfect, and happy, and unproblematic... but the truth of the matter is, things like : racism, sexism, homophobia, etc. are parts of HISTORY and REALITY and it’s foolish to ignore these facets of LIFE even in character creation and writing.
if a character is POC , then sadly there’s racism in their world. and we’re allowed to write about that. we’re allowed to talk about it. it’s a thing? that’s reality. we don’t want it to be, but it is. and asking POC writers to ignore racism??? when its something we’ve lived with, something that’s shaped us and shaped our characters...THAT’S gross.
thanks for coming to my ted talk
