things didn't work. they couldn't seem to make them work no matter how hard they tried but it wasn't like he couldn't ever see her again. the two had kids together and every time they swapped them back and forth between each other's houses, he lingered near her and found himself making some sort of move in attempt to draw her back in. he'd tucked their kids into bed and found himself back in the kitchen where his ex was standing. "you want a glass of wine before you go or somethin'?"

gretchen hadn't seen the other in years. they grew up together, always being that other person she could lean on whenever her brother wasn't around and she often thought about him and wondered how he was doing nowadays but she was always worried it would be a little weird since the two hadn't spoke in so long. regardless of that, she was looking forward to seeing him again in the midst of all the wedding planning. a smile appeared on her face when she noticed him walk in for the rehearsal dinner, "hey," she spoke, tucking some of her brunette hair behind her ear. "long time, no see right? how have you been?"

ethan’s time in the military had admittedly messed him up pretty bad. while he did what he could to live with the reprecussions of it all, he still very much struggled with nightmares and well, sloane was a saint. “you deserve better than this.” he finally spoke, his body hunched forward in the bathtub as she attempted to soothe him. he stared at the faucet in front of him and glanced back at her, “am i really worth it?” he asked, his tired eyes meeting hers.
