Summary:
Beta accompanies Alva and Aloy to Quen lands to reactivate Leviathan. As if dealing with Aloy's departure, hostile Quen, learning to override machines, and inscrutable pre-Plague technology wasn't enough, she has to hide her affection for Alva and cope with meeting Federa. But when an unexpected change in Quen politics threatens to shatter everything, Beta and Federa must join forces to save Alva, Leviathan and the Quen. Will their alliance remain temporary, or grow into something deeper?

Ever since Aloy recovered the final missing episodes of Second Time Around from an archive in what was once Los Angeles, Beta has been begging everyone she knows to watch it with her. For the longest time they all declined for one reason or another, busy as they are, but she's finally managed to catch Alva for an evening.

During the first season, Beta found herself inching closer and closer towards Alva's side, and being more interested in glancing at her than looking at the holo. Besides, she already knows how each episode ends anyway. By the time they reach the season finale, she's probably looked more at Alva than she's seen of the show, and she's sitting so close she has to concentrate on her breathing not to accidentally brush up against her. Until she decides not to, and lets herself tip over against Alva's side, mildly terrified for a reason she can't explain.
Alva's shoulder is warm and soft, but it's a different kind of warmth from the one she's felt whenever Aloy has scooped her up in a hug. Where Aloy’s warmth is comforting and soothing, steady and enveloping, Alva's is exciting, pulsating, and sends ripples of warmth through her body.
Beta looks at Alva’s face, features accentuated by the sharp blue light of the holo. Her gaze trickles downward, past the point where their shoulders meet and lands on Alva's hand. Imagining what it would feel like to touch her fingertips against her palm, Beta feels a wave of something heavy flush through her chest, tying her heart into knots. When she looks back up, she finds a pair of brown eyes meeting hers, and jumps back in surprise at the acknowledgement of her existence.
“You're blushing”
“What? No, I-” Beta retorts, but raises her hand to her face, and feels her cheek burn uncharacteristically hot.
“Damnit”
“It's okay. You're cute when you get flustered” Alva reassures, wrapping an arm around Beta’s waist to pull her back close, then resting her head on top of Beta’s shoulder.

Sensory freefall. Just like in the Zeniths’ agony simulations, except this time she has no idea what she's done wrong to deserve it. And worst of all, this is real, not a neurological illusion. But the redeeming quality of the real world is that you can take control. In Beta’s case, that often means running away.
“I need to go to bed” Beta blurts out, pulling herself out of Alva's embrace.
“Really?” Alva looks defeated as she lifts her head and looks up at Beta.
“Yep, I've.. lots to do tomorrow” that’s a lie, GAIA hasn't assigned her a new project in weeks.
“Are you sure? Don't you want to finish the episode?”
“I've seen it before. You can finish without me” Beta gets up and scurries towards the stairs leading down to her room.
“Goodnight, Bee”
“Goodnight, Alva” Beta decides not to turn around as she replies, not wanting to reveal how red she knows the nickname has made her face.
