Artist’s impression of the Chicxulub Crater soon after an asteroid hit the Yucatán Peninsula, just under 66 million years ago. The crater raised up a peak ring - a circular series of hills - and its impact was so strong that it threw up material from the bottom of the Earth’s crust (granite and pink granite).
The asteroid impact may also have been responsible for the extinction of the dinosaurs, according to the Alvarez hypothesis.
We used to think extinction wasn't possible. Georges Cuvier proved it was. But can we stop it from happening today?
