Raised to life everlasting. James 5:13-20 This passage made me think. This section of the letter is where some current religions get the idea that prayer equals manipulating God for physical healing and that staying sick or continuing to suffer is the fault of the sufferer for a lack of faith. But this teaching is wrong. It is not in context with the rest of James' letter and it defies other parts of Scripture. Jesus said that suffering would be part of living (John 16:33). Paul wrote about a thorn in his flesh that no prayer relieved (2 Corinthians 12). I think this passage is about drawing near to God in the hard times so that our relationship with Him is fully reconciled and we can endure whatever the affliction with confidence that God will be glorified even in our suffering. Paul wrote about this concept to the Corinthians where we wrote, "This light and momentary affliction is preparing us for an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison" ( 2 Corinthians 4). An eternal weight of glory, made possible by the prayer of the righteous. And the righteous are those who confess and turn away from whatever sins entangle their hearts and minds (Hebrews 12). To be raised up is eternal, not temporal. We may feel crushed and perplexed, confused and lost, but with our eyes of Jesus, who is the author and protector of our faith, we can be at peace. Prayer, fervent and righteous, is the path to joyful reconciliation with the Father. #biblestudy #biblegram #biblejournaling #Jesusfollower #alwaylearning https://www.instagram.com/p/B_aZB2vnV8B/?igshid=19ypu5ewaa0qb
Mandatum novum do vobis John 13:34 A mandate to love one another the way Jesus loves us. What does that love look like? Caring for the needy with cheerfulness and humility, putting others first, loving our neighbors as we love ourselves (James 2). This is the new commandment from Jesus at the table that Passover meal: love one another as I have loved you. This kind of love requires action. 1 John 3:18: Little children, let us not love in word or talk, but in deed and in truth. Jesus' final work of love in action began when he washed the feet of the disciples and was complete when he said, "It is finished "only a few hours later. "In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us" 1 John 4:10-12. Mandatum novum do vobis ut duligatus invicem sicut dilexi vos. A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you are also to love one another. #Joyful #alwaylearning #Jesusfollower #maundythursday https://www.instagram.com/p/B-xPGsone36/?igshid=ezqf9vmljk9x
Nineveh: the Sequel. Nahum chapter 1. It seems like every blockbuster movie or popular novel tries to create a sequel that matches the drama and characters of the original. Most of the time, the sequel falls flat. Either the original writers don't return or there's some formula that they try to squeeze the story into or they just run out of ideas. Now and then, however, there is a sequel that not only maintains the energy of the original, but adds to the initial storyline in a meaningful way. The prophet Nahum was responsible for the sequel to Jonah. The setting is the same, Nineveh. The characters have changed, from Sennacherib who called for repentance to Ashurbamipal, who reigned over Assyria at the height of power. The conflict is also the same: defiant and evil people running into the omnipotent God. Jonah may have been upset at the Ninevites repentance, but God relented on destruction for that entire generation and the one that followed. However, by the time Nahum preached, the Ninevites had returned to their old ways with a vengeance. They were more cruel, more violent, and more evil than ever before, and God said, "Enough." This time, there is no offer of repentance. There is only the promise of utter destruction, which history verifies. God made a complete end to Assyria as a world power. In the middle of Nahum's description of Assyria's utter destruction, he offers comfort to those who take refuge in God. His name means "consolation" and he lives that name even in the middle of catastrophe. The Lord is slow to anger and great in power. The Lord is good. The Lord is a stronghold in the day of trouble. The Lord knows those who take refuge in Him. The Lord brings good news and peace. We can trust Him I the middle of the chaos. That is good news, indeed! #Jesusfollower #Biblestudy #alwaylearning #Joyful Thanks to @drtonyevans and @insightforlivingministries for their publications that helped establish context for Nahum https://www.instagram.com/p/B94yWBiHgX9/?igshid=h7drztrf20ii

So, my daughter had been getting these seemingly random #hives after eating - usually breakfast. It would be one or two, didn’t really seem to bother her, and would go away after thirty minutes or so. I wasn’t too worried about a food allergy bc she wasn’t having any respiratory or digestive issues and there was no facial swelling. But still. Obviously something was going on. And obviously her pediatrician had no idea. So, whenever I’m without answers, but I just need to do something proactive, I consult a #naturopath. This naturopath asked if my girl eats a lot of bananas, berries and avocado. Ummm... yes, YES and yes. She suggested that it was probably an excess of synthetic ethylene, the chemical sprayed on basically ALL of our off-season produce. Well, wouldn’t you know, after just one day of going cold turkey off of bananas and avocado (my girl would kill me if she didn’t eat a berry after every meal!) the hives went away. Like, woah. So, now my latest grocery project is to eat as seasonally as possible, within California (my home state) and to soak any fruit and veg that is coming from out-of-state. These guys are in a water, lemon essential oil and vinegar bath. #alwaylearning #alwaysstrivingtobebetter
