Glee Fic: A Year in the Life

now that school is behind me. I’m taking fic prompts and right out of the gate I knew I could count on my ex-roommate.

alydeemckean: I WANT FUTURE KLAINE WITH THE BABY

So here you go. (and because i’m feeling nice...pure - mostly - fluff).

Day 1:

Personally, Kurt thought she looked like an alien.

Of course he would never say that out loud, because he knows his dad would latch on to that comment and 15 years from now be heartily chortling as he told his granddaughter the story of the day she was born and her own father called her an alien.

Oh my god, I’m a father, in one stomach-lurching swoop it finally hit him. He should probably not be holding a 7lb fragile alien if he’s going to pass out. Hoping he looked remotely calm, Kurt made eye contact with Blaine, holding the bundle out a bit, inviting him to take her.

Awkwardly they trade her off - something that will get better with practice no doubt - and Blaine rocks her slightly as he shushes her instant squirming.

The hospital is quiet at this time of night, save for the hum of monitors and another baby whimpering in the adjacent room. Rachel is finally getting some well deserved sleep and Burt is phoning every contact on his cellphone to tell the news. Kurt sits in the closest arm chair and just watches Blaine bop around the room as Tracy settles again.

Somewhere at the back of Kurt’s brain there is rising panic over the fact that he and Blaine now are responsible for this tiny living human being, but in that moment he just takes the scene in and tries to imprint this moment of quiet in the back of his retinas forever.

Blaine hums his way back over to Kurt and tenderly sits in the chair beside him. Kurt leans over, dropping his head on Blaine’s shoulder, exhaustion finally hitting him.

“You know,” Blaine whispers just so Kurt can hear, “I know I’m supposed to say she’s beautiful, but honestly she kind of looks like Jabba the Hut.”

Kurt has to muffle his snort into Blaine’s collar to avoid disrupting the quiet din.

Day 55:

“go to sleep, go to sleep go to sleeeep” Blaine sing-songs softly in Tracy’s ear. Or mouth, or whatever orifice is closer to his face as he continues to bounce the screaming banshee.

“Daddy just wants you to go to sleeeeep, so he can get some sleeeep. but you dont know what i’m saying because you’re a baby who apparently doesn’t sleeeeeeep”

He continues to hum nonsense as he laps the nursery for the umpteenth time. Soon he’ll have worn down a path through the carpet, like herds of cows do when they’ve walked the same field for years.

Blaine has also decided he never needs to go to the gym again, ever. He’s pretty sure his arms are more ripped than any time and money he’d spent on that personal trainer last year. Blaine decides he’s going to start his own personal training business and call it “So Your Baby thinks Every Surface is Lava Training Solutions”. It will have the tagline: Want to strengthen muscles you didn’t know exist? Have my baby for a week to find out now.

Blaine is pretty sure he hasn’t slept in 2 months and it’s getting to get to him. He starts up some sort of waltz-like step and sway to change things up. Only because his ear has been tuned to Tracy’s shrill cries, he thinks he hears her next one drop a few decibels. Not to give himself false hope too soon, he continues his little waltz with slightly more exaggerated steps. Slowly her shrieks turn to wails which soon turn to whimpers.

He hears a small snicker from the doorway and turns his head to see Kurt leaning against the door frame, phone in one hand, recording the scene, the other covering his mouth. Blaine realizes that he is now full out waltzing with over exaggerated swoops and and sways and humming Beauty and the Beast.

He looks down to see Tracy’s red but resting face and relief courses through him. The true test comes when he makes his way over to the crib and tries to sync up the rocking motion with setting her down and rocking the crib. Basically as easy as diffusing a bomb. Thankfully, Kurt makes his way over and rocks the crib and joins Blaine in humming softly.

Feeling quite a bit like he’s in a game of Operation, Blaine carefully extracts his arms from Tracy’s sleeping form and hovers his hands only for a moment before removing himself from the fold completely. There is a moment where neither he or Kurt move save for humming and rocking before Tracy takes a deep breath and nuzzles into her blanket.

Blaine exhales silently and triumphantly pumps his fist in the air. Kurt swats at him, continuing to rock the crib. It’s only as Kurt goes to pull away that a small murmur emerges from the blankets. Before Kurt can react Blaine swoops in to press a quick kiss to his cheek and whispers “tag, you’re it,” before all but running out of the room.

There is no remorse in the Game of Bedtime and Blaine is going to go claim his throne. And by throne he means bed.

Day 108:

Kurt hates hospitals. At this point in his life he should have a traveler rewards card supplied to him for the number of times he’s been in a hospital. Last time he had been in a hospital bed he’d scoffed at his father’s concern, thinking he was old enough to take care of himself.

He owed his dad a life time of apologies. Sitting in a waiting room while your child is examined by a doctor is the most excruciating experience. You never feel as hopeless and helpless as when you can’t do anything to make your baby feel better. When you have to hand her off to strangers so they can run god knows what tests on her.

His senses prickling, he sees Blaine wearily walk through the door and is out of his seat and by his side before they can swing shut. Blaine pulls him into a hug and Kurt can’t get a read on his expression.

“She’s going to be okay,” Blaine breathes out and the world feels like it’s lifted itself from Kurt’s shoulders. That being said he pulls back to let Blaine elaborate.

The circles under his eyes make his face look hollow, but relief and mild confusion sit on the surface, he gestures to his ear, “I guess there’s some vestibular thing going on with her inner ear. Um, it could just be a really bad ear infection, or there might be something else going on.”

Kurt looks quizzical, “What do you mean something else?”

Blaine shrugs, “I don’t know, like - okay you know how we always sing to her to go to sleep and she just shrieks over top of it anyways? I thought she just really hated show tunes, but she might just not be hearing them right. They threw a lot of words at me, and I mean we know she isn’t totally deaf. But there might be some impairment there.”

Kurt doesn’t know what feeling he’s having but it suddenly all just feels too much. He wraps himself around Blaine again and they just stand there clutching each other for support.

“She’s okay,” he repeats. “Whatever happens, she’s okay and we still have our baby.”

Day 234:

“Kurt, where did you put the bottle?”

“It’s in the diaper bag already, I told you.”

“Well, I’m looking in the diaper bag and it’s not here.”

“It has to be there - Oh for godssake did you forget to take the garbage out again, Blaine?”

“Gagaba?”

“Oh I’m sorry, I left my second set of arms at work, along with my teleporter and apparently this freaking bottle!”

“It’s in the bag! Alright, you get to explain to the director why my suit smells like week old fish and I’ll take these out myself!”

“Daga!”

“If you’re so intent on going out, just go! Tracy and I will just stay home with our smelly fish!”

“This event was your idea!”

“Dada!”

Kurt’s hand is on the handle of the front door, his other arm gripping a garbage bag like a decapitated head; Blaine stands on the other side of the room, hair half gelled, holding any number of items that normally live in their travel diaper bag. Both are frozen, looking at their daughter sitting on the carpet between them, clapping her hands and giggling. Her eyes are bright with laughter as she looks between them, flailing her favourite giraffe stuffy.

“Did she just ....” Blaine dares not to move.

Kurt nods, “Tracy, honey,” he motions at her, grabbing her attention and crouching down beside her. “Tracy what did you just say?”

She still giggles at him and with her free hand, opens it wide and touches her thumb to her temple once.

Blaine gasps and drops the diaper bag, joining beside Kurt who continues, “Yes Tracy, ‘Dada’,” he mirrors her motion with his own hand. “Now try again with your words,” he touches his lips.

She wobbles a little in her seat because she keeps giggling so much she starts drooling. But after a few moments, a shriek of laughter pierces their ears, “DADA!” as she thumbs at her forehead again.

Kurt immediately dives forward and starts nuzzling at her belly, which leads to an eruption of more laughter from her tiny form as she bats her hands on the side of his face.

When Kurt looks up again, Blaine is covering his mouth and tears of joy are streaming down his face. He sits up and runs a thumb over Blaine’s cheeks before encouraging him to come join the party on the floor. Blaine runs a hand over Tracy’s wavy hair that is now just long enough to hide the cochlear implant in her right ear.

The family stays on the floor like that for some time, everything else for the evening forgotten.

Day 365:

The rain pitter-patters against the window of their bedroom, leaving the room in a soft glow. Blaine rolls over and buries his face in Kurt’s arm in an attempt to fall back into dreamland. Instead he feels Kurt roll so he’s facing Blaine, the loss of arm contact makes Blaine whine incoherently.

“Hey,” Kurt whispers like he’s filling Blaine in on a secret, “Guess what time it is?”

“dun’wannag’tupyet” Blaine squeezes his eyes shut tighter.

“It’s 8 o’clock” Kurt squeaks.

Blaine’s brain tries to catch up with the conversation, “...PM?”

“AM! Blaine, she’s not awake yet!”

Concern jolts through Blaine making his body react before his brain does, he sits up too fast, “Is she okay? What’s wrong?”

Kurt shushes him and pulls him back down easily. “Nothing! I woke up at 6 and panicked too, but I went and checked her and she’s just sleeping still. Blaine, we slept 7 hours straight.”

Kurt is grinning like Christmas came early and now Blaine rolls over to check their alarm clock for sure. Now that he thinks about it, he feels more well rested than any time he can remember and he feels energy running through his veins. He whips back to Kurt, “We slept in,” he repeats, mirroring Kurt’s manic smile.

Blaine offers a triumphant high five and they both start rolling around laughing.

Kurt continues to giggle as Blaine tries to shush themselves before they risk breaking this moment of peace. He lays back down, one arm behind his head as he stares up at the ceiling, “When did we become those people who consider 8 am sleeping in?”

“Mm, I’d say probably about a year ago,” Kurt teases, “Happy one year dad-a-versary.”

Blaine rolls his head in Kurt’s direction and smiles lovingly, feeling relaxed and revitalized, “Happy one year dad-a-versary to you too.”

On cue, they hear a whimper the adjoining room and Kurt puts his finger to his nose, trying to look innocent, “Not it!”

Blaine simply kisses his nose anyways and bounces out of bed, “That’s fine with me, I get to go see the birthday girl first because I’m the fun parent anyways.”

He bolts out the door as Kurt jumps up and chases his him to their daughter’s room.

It’s not until over a decade later that Tracy learns that the scar on Papa’s eyebrow is from Dad tackling him to the ground on her first birthday because they both wanted to see her first.

She kind of wants to puke from embarrassment as her friends aww around her.

Even though later she’ll tuck herself between them in bed to watch a movie feeling like she has the best parents in the world.
